‘Use Military Force To End Banditry, Not Negotiation’, Bukarti Counters Yerima

Published

on

A security expert, Bulama Bukarti, has disagreed with a former Governor of Zamfara State, Ahmad Yerima, who advised President Bola Tinubu to negotiate with bandits.

Bukarti, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, said that the Federal Government should instead use military force to end any form of terrorism and banditry.

Earlier on Monday, Yerima visited the President at Aso Villa and suggested that the best way to end insurgency in Nigeria is to dialogue with bandits rather than apply military force on them.

However, Burkati said that dialogue and negotiations have no place in ending the security challenges within the country.

The security expert said, “Dialogue or negotiations implies sitting round the table and conversing with the bandits or the terrorists and giving them something in order to get something from them. It’s like a compromise and that is not how to deal with them.

“The way to deal with them is to start with the stick because Yerima suggests that we start with the carrot, give them an opportunity to defect or to repent and if they don’t, then go all in with the military. We have tried that before and it did not work.

“What you need to do is to go hard on the military side of things and then after you have used enough military power on them, you may then open the door not for negotiation, for amnesty because you don’t negotiate with terrorists, you don’t negotiate with criminals.”

He further stated that what the Federal Government should do is allow the bandits that want to repent lay down their arms and turn themselves in to the authorities.

Bukarti said the government will then decide whether to prosecute the bandits or follow the procedure laid down by experts to demobilise them properly, rehabilitate them and then reintegrate them into communities.

“That is the process, it is not about negotiation, it is not about dialogue; it is a question of using military force against them to show them that Nigeria has the might to crush them and then you allow them to repent and defect if they want to,” he added.

Minimum Wage: Labour Meets Ahead Of Tuesday’s Negotiations

…Insists On May 31 Deadline For N615k Minimum Wage

The Organised Labour comprising of the Trade Union Congress and the Nigeria Labour Congress, met today (Monday) ahead of the meeting with the tripartite committee on minimum wage, which is set to be held Tomorrow (Tuesday), sources familiar with the matter told our correspondent in Abuja.

During the meeting, the unionists resolved to “stand on business” as regards the May 31, 2024 deadline.

“We met Today, and one of the resolutions is that we are not shifting grounds on the May 31 deadline,” the source, who is also a member of the minimum wage committee, said.

The Chairman of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage, Alhaji Bukar Goni, indicated in a letter of invitation to labour leaders that negotiations will continue on Tuesday (Tomorrow).

His letter came 24 hours after the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress walked out on the minimum wage negotiation committee after the Federal Government offered to pay N48,000 as the new minimum wage.

The organised private Sector, on the other hand, proposed an initial offer of N54,000. After dumping the talks, the labour leaders addressed a press conference where they expressed their anger over the Federal Government’s offer.

The National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, insisted on N615,000 minimum wage, arguing that the amount was arrived at after an analysis of the current economic situation and the needs of an average Nigerian family of six.

He blamed the government and the OPS for the breakdown in negotiation, saying, “Despite earnest efforts to reach an equitable agreement, the less than reasonable action of the Government and the Organised Private Sector has led to a breakdown in negotiations.”

But speaking on behalf of the OPS, the Director-General of the Nigeria Employers Consultative Association, Mr Adewale-Smatt Oyerinde, described unions’ walkout when negotiation had not started as unfortunate.

The NECA DG admonished the union leaders to reconsider their position and return to the negotiation table in the interest of their members and national development.

However, Ajaero justified their decision to abandon the negotiation, saying, “The government’s proposal of a paltry N48,000 as the minimum wage does not only insult the sensibilities of Nigerian workers but also falls significantly short of meeting our needs and aspirations.

“Though it is worth noting that even the least paid workers in the private sector receive N78,000 as clearly stated by the OPS, highlighting the stark disparity between the proposed minimum wage and prevailing standards further demonstrating the unwillingness of employers and Government to faithfully negotiate a fair national minimum wage for workers in Nigeria.’’

He accused the government of failing to provide data to support its offer, noting that this undermined the credibility of the negotiation.

“Furthermore, the government’s failure to provide any substantiated data to support their offer exacerbates the situation. This lack of transparency and good faith undermines the credibility of the negotiation process and erodes trust between the parties involved.

The NLC president noted that the unions remained committed to fighting for the rights and interests of Nigerian workers.

He also called on the government to reconsider its position and come to the negotiation table with “clear hands that reflect the true value of the contributions made by Nigerian workers to the nation’s development and the objective socioeconomic realities that confront not just Nigerian workers but Nigerians today as a result of the policies of the Federal Government.”

President Tinubu, through Vice President Kashim Shettima, on January 30, 2024, inaugurated the 37-member Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage to come up with a new minimum wage ahead of the expiration of the current N30,000 wage on April 18.

With its membership cutting across federal and state governments, the private sector and organised labour, the panel is to recommend a new national minimum wage for the country.

During the inauguration of the panel, Shettima urged the members to “speedily” arrive at a resolution and submit their reports early.

“This timely submission is crucial to ensure the emergence of a new minimum wage,” Shettima said.

In furtherance of its assignment, a zonal public hearing was held simultaneously on March 7 in Lagos, Kano, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Adamawa, and Abuja.

The NLC and the TUC in different states proposed various figures as a living wage, referencing the current economic crunch and the high costs of living.

In their different proposals on the minimum wage, the NLC members in the South-West states demanded N794,000 as the TUC suggested N447,000.

At the North-Central zonal hearing in Abuja, the workers demanded N709,000 as the new national minimum wage, while their counterparts in the South-South clamoured for N850,000.

In the North-West, N485,000 was proposed, while the South-East stakeholders demanded N540,000 minimum wage.

But organised labour settled for N615,000 as a living wage.

The National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has issued a public notification regarding the recall of Caro White Skin Lightening Beauty Lotion by the European Union (EU) Rapid Alert System for Dangerous Non-Food Products (RAPEX).

A statement on NAFDAC’s website, ‘Public Alert No. 15/2023 – Alert on the Recall of Ivorian Made Skin Lightening Beauty Lotion’, obtained by Channels Television, said the product failed to comply with the Cosmetic Products Regulation due to its high concentration of Kojic Acid, which surpasses the allowable maximum concentration of one per cent.

The conclusion was drawn by the EU Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS).

The presence of a high concentration of Kojic Acid raises concerns regarding potential endocrine-disrupting properties associated with its usage.

While the product is not listed in the NAFDAC database, the body advised importers, distributors, retailers, and consumers to exercise caution and vigilance regarding the product.

“The product authenticity and physical condition should be carefully checked. Members of the public in possession of the product should discontinue the sale or use and submit stock to the nearest NAFDAC office,” the statement read in part.

Healthcare professionals and consumers were also encouraged to report adverse events experienced with the use of the product to the nearest NAFDAC office.

On the 7th of July 2023, following an analysis, five of the United Kingdom stores discovered that Caro White Intensive Care Lightening Beauty Cream, sold via eBay, posed a serious chemical risk to consumers.

The cream was found to contain 422mg/kg (0.042% w/w) clobetasol propionate, a substance prohibited in cosmetic products.

Additionally, hydroquinone, another prohibited ingredient, was found in the product, which was not listed on the box. The product also lacked proper labelling and markings.
The hazardous discovery prompted corrective action, leading eBay to promptly remove the listing from its online marketplace.

Owners of the products were also strongly advised to discontinue its usage immediately.

The details of the recalled brand in the UK include:
Product Description: The product was comprised of a card box containing a tube of orange cream. The box was marked with the following details: Caro white, Lightening Beauty Cream, With carrot oil, 30ml, Dream Cosmetics, 23 BP 4757, Abidjan 23, CI. The tube also bore the same markings.
