‘We Were Very Authentic,’ Stella Damasus Recalls Nollywood Memories

Published

on

Nollywood veteran, author, coach, and singer Stella Damasus has identified authenticity as a defining quality that set her generation of leading female actors apart during the early era of Nollywood.

The veteran actress, whose career has spanned decades across stage and screen, said she and her contemporaries stood out because they remained true to themselves rather than trying to imitate others.

“We were very authentic,” Damasus said on the Pulse Old vs New show. “We were not trying to be like other people. We’re not trying to copy other people or be who we’re not. Everything was authentic.”

Damasus, who authored the book Mama It’s a Girl, further added that she, like other big actresses, Genevieve Nnaji and Omotola Jalade Ekehinde, in the early days of Nollywood, had no idea how far and how big they would later become from doing what they passionately enjoyed doing.

“I’m going to assure you, we were not doing it because of the fame or the money. There was no social media to tell us how big we could get. We did not know,” the veteran said.

“After you see yourself on a poster, that’s about it. People will recognise you here and there and all of that at that time. It wasn’t about the fame. It wasn’t about the money. How much were they paying us?”

“We just loved the job. It was more about passion.”

The prominent screen actor recalled how tough and daring it was for any female to be seen as an actor.

“At that time, it wasn’t easy for females at that age to be allowed by parents and families to enter the industry,” she said. “So those of us who could were bold.”

Damasus admitted that the movie ‘The Widow’ from 2005, where she played the role of a grieving wife subjected to intense emotional and physical degradation by her husband’s relatives following his sudden death, was one of her most challenging roles, one of the biggest because it changed her career overnight, both at home and abroad.

“But I’m grateful for the role because I saw what could happen, and then it did happen,” she added.

‘I defeated 17 Governors, won’t support APC’ – Davido

Published

on

Popular Nigerian singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has ruled out supporting the All Progressives Congress, APC, ahead of the 2027 presidential election, despite his uncle, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, endorsing President Bola Tinubu.

In a recent video making the rounds online, the Grammy-nominated artist made his position known during an interview with News Central TV, just days after the Osun State governorship election and the announcement of the results.

The singer explained that although his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, declared support for President Bola Tinubu after winning the election, he was not obligated to follow his uncle’s political choice.

He also recalled his involvement in previous political campaigns, including his support for former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar when they were in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Davido said, “I defeated 17 governors with all their power, with all their immunity, escort commanders, DSS, with all their billions. I defeated them with just a phone.

“For now, I feel like I did what I had to do for the Osun people and my family.

“You can’t force me to have a presidential candidate. My uncle might have his personal reasons for the gain of the state.”

Speaking about his uncle’s decision to support Tinubu, the singer said, “My uncle, immediately he won, came out to declare his support for President Tinubu. But as for me, I am not prepared to support anybody.

“I personally haven’t seen anybody in the past. Yes, I have supported Atiku before when we were in PDP, and I even supported in 2015 when APC first did the merger. My late uncle was part of the APC, so I campaigned then.

“But right now, I don’t have a presidential candidate. It might change, sha. It’s not going to be APC, but everybody should have their own,” he said.

“How Toyin Abraham’s fans always attack me for dropping comments on Funke Akindele’s posts” – Actress Yetunde Bakare speaks out

Published

on

Nollywood actress Yetunde Bakare isn’t done speaking out after the leaked audio of Toyin Abraham.

It was reported that a 12-minute leaked audio recording of Abraham, lashing out over the daily insults and criticisms she was constantly receiving and addressing her relationships with colleagues, had surfaced online.

The audio recording, primarily in Yoruba and pidgin, also showed Abraham’s fan repeatedly hurling insults at Funke Akindele, while Abraham listened and laughed rather than reprimanding her.

Bisgold also touched on previous insults directed at Iyabo Ojo, which she said the actress couldn’t get over, and Abraham laughed, saying she couldn’t get over it either.

Following the audio leak, Yetunde Bakare left a comment on Regina Chukwu’s post about people who secretly record conversations.

Her post didn’t sit well with many who lashed out at her.

Responding to them, Yetunde questioned if her crime is supporting someone with her full chest. Calling their behaviour a high level of stupidīty, she said they need special evaluation.

Not done, she made a video online explaining the situation, claiming she wasn’t aware of Toyin’s leaked audio when she left a comment on Regina’s page.

Yetunde revealed that Toyin’s fans always attack her whenever she comments on Funke’s posts.

She said the constant attacks made her feel targeted, which led to the whole misunderstanding
