Nigeria At War, Says Fmr DSS Operative As Terror Group Emerges In Kebbi, Sokoto

Published

on

In light of the emergence of a new terrorist group known as LAKURAWA, former DSS Operative, Seyi Adetayo said that Nigerians need to declare that they are at war.

The former DSS Operative made it known on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday that Lakurawa, despite being a new face is the same as the ISWAP, Boko Haram and splinter bandit cells ravaging most parts of the North East..

“Lakurawa will be another name that will dominate our public space in terms of terror for a long time until we decide to declare that Nigeria is at war and as such, there are certain measures to be put in place to allow the military and intelligence service to be able to do their work better’,’ Adetayo said.

In November, the Director of Defense Media Operations, Maj. Gen. Edward Buba disclosed that “Troops are confronted with Lakurawa in the Northwestern states of Sokoto and Kebbi respectively.”

Lakurawa according to Buba are affiliated with terrorists from the Sahel region in the Republics of Mali and Niger that have moved to the North-West in Nigeria as a result of instability in the area.

Their base of operation is said to be in Kebbi and Sokoto states.

Security experts have blamed the indigenes of the two states for welcoming them rather than reporting them. They settled in until they gained a stronghold and began terrorizing the states.

On what the military and government should do to resolve the situation, Adetayo said that massive recruitment into the army should be done because the current number of soldiers in Nigeria is not enough.

“If we do not do anything about extinguishing this fire, lots of young boys will continue to join these terror groups and soon, Nigeria will be a country where you can’t move around anymore.”

Also speaking on the show was the military strategist, Maj. Gen. Pat Akem (Rtd.) shared that there was no need to fret over the emergence of the terror group as President Tinubu was putting in place proactive measures to mitigate the situation.

Akem said, “I do not think war should be declared. The president has already given a broad mandate to the armed forces to execute the bandits.”

He stated that declaring war will be futile if the resources were not in place, laying emphasis on the demystification of the military in the country.

He further stated that the armed forces should not be seen the way they are seen in Nigeria as they do things they aren’t supposed to do like policing work, anti-kidnapping and banditry operations and as such, it diminishes them.

It’s Not Late To Present 2025 Budget, Tinubu Wants To Prevent Lapses – Senator Sani

Published

on

The Chairman of Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Musa Sani, has said that President Bola Tinubu is taking his time before presenting the 2025 budget to the National Assembly in order to prevent lapses.

The lawmaker, who was a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, insisted that it is not yet late for the President to present the 2025 appropriation bill.

Senator Sani noted that there were a lot of noises from Nigerians that the government was rushing policies, adding that the President considered those voices and is now ensuring that everything is properly checked before presenting a budget.

“I believe that Mr President is now considering those voices that Nigerians made in making sure that the budget he is bringing is a budget that will rediscover the economy of Nigeria, so I don’t think it is late (to present the budget).

“I believe Mr President is doing what he is supposed to do in order to checkmate whatever lapses we had in 2024 budget and then correct them in 2025 budget. So, for me, it is not too late,” Senator Sani said.

While acknowledging that it is expected that the executive presents budget to the National Assembly in good time to enable the lawmakers to properly work on it, Senator Sani said that they would also not appreciate a haphazardly prepared document.

“You can see since the inception of this government so many reform policies have been coming up and we appreciate the fact that the economic team are doing their job the way it is supposed to be done.

“We also as lawmakers expect that we shall be given budget timely so that we can start working on them. But we also at the same time will not want a situation whereby a document will just be presented to us.”

With just over two months to the end of the 2024 fiscal year, the House of Representatives had few weeks ago drawn attention to the violation of the Fiscal Responsibility Act by President Bola Tinubu.

In a motion by a member of the House, Clement Jimbo, the lawmakers drew attention to the fact that the 2025 Budget Estimates have not been presented before the National Assembly some two months before the end of 2024.

The House questioned the available time before the end of the year to thoroughly consider and pass the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) and 2025 Budget Estimates.

The House noted that the Fiscal Responsibility Act 2007 provided for the prudent management of the nation’s resources and that Section 11(1)(b) stipulated that the Federal Government must, not later than four months before the commencement of the next financial year, cause to be prepared and laid before the National Assembly, an MTEF for the next three financial years.

The matter was referred to the Committee on National Planning.

…assures Ogun Waterside people of adequate security

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has assured the people of Ogun Waterside Local Government Area that his administration would not cede any part of the state to other states in the country.

Governor Abiodun gave the assurance at a meeting with representatives of the local government, made up of traditional rulers, technocrats, and prominent government functionaries, held at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Speaking on some of the items discussed at the meeting, the former Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Segun Awonusi, said the governor has taken note of reported incursions into parts of the state from neighbouring states and has taken steps to address the issue.

Prof. Awonusi said: “We have come here to discuss the affairs of the local government with the governor. We appreciate him for what he has done so far, and we urge him to do more.

“Because of reports of incursions from Lagos and Ondo states on Ode-Omi and Makun to seize parts of our land, the governor has promised that he will ensure that not an inch of Ogun State is lost to any other state.

“He has also promised to provide adequate security so that our people can live in peace.”

Also speaking, the former Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Abdul Balogun, disclosed that the governor has given the people of the local government area an assurance of immediate rehabilitation of the Dau-Ibiade-Abigi-Efire-Makun-Ilisin road.

Balogun further stated the resolve of the state governor to restore electricity supply to an area that has been in darkness for the past three years.

“The governor has also committed himself to building a naval base in the area. The groundbreaking ceremony of the project would have been done, but due to the rainy season, he has assured that this will be done immediately after the rain subsides.

“The Deep Sea Port at Olokola is another project that is very dear to the governor’s heart, and he has given us an assurance that he will work on it,” Hon. Balogun noted.

On the ongoing construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road by the federal government, the former Environment Commissioner said the governor has promised to reach out to the Works Minister to see how the road from Ogun Waterside to Sagamu Expressway could be accommodated to ensure that the local government and the state at large benefit from such a gigantic project.

Hon. Balogun, while reiterating the commitment of the Abiodun-led administration to do more for the area, pledged to always support the government in its efforts to engender more development in the state.
