Useni Clinching Plateau’s PDP Guber Ticket Laudable – Mantu

Dr. Umar Mantu, an aspirant to the Mangu/Bokkos Federal Constituency seat, has congratulated Senator Jerry Useni for clinching the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) ticket to contest the Plateau governorship seat in 2019.

Useni, the senator representing Plateau South, clinched the ticket after defeating 12 other aspirants in the primary elections held in Jos on Sunday.

According to the results announced Monday morning, Useni, former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister and military governor of old Bendel State, garnered 1,018 votes to floor his closest opponent, Honourable Johnbull Shekarau, who got 340 votes.

Useni will slug it out with the incumbent governor, Simon Lalong, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who emerged unopposed as the candidate of his party on Sunday.

Mantu, in a statement on Monday in Jos, said that Useni’s leadership experience as military governor, FCT minister and Army General had made him the best material to govern the crisis-ridden north-central state.

“Plateau needs someone who understands security, politics, economy and mutual co-existence. The state is facing some serious security challenges and the people want a peaceful atmosphere to (move) forward. Useni will provide this,” he said.

The statement signed by Mr Emmanuel Macham, on behalf of the Umar Mantu Campaign Organisation, said that Useni had proved a unifying force over the years and would deploy such unifying skills to steer Plateau through its trying times.

Mantu urged the aspirants to unite around the winner and work toward victory in the 2019 general elections.

“Since the ultimate dream is a united, prosperous and peaceful Plateau, we must all work for it. Useni is just the rallying point. So, we must rally round him to achieve the Plateau of our dream,” he said.

The aspirant described the primary election that produced Useni as “the best ever, in Plateau”, and commended the state’s PDP chairman, Chief Damishi Sango, for keeping to his promise to conduct a transparent and credible election.

Mantu also commended the delegates for making the right choice, and equally hailed the aspirants’ maturity and calmness throughout the exercise.

The Kano State Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party NNPP, Suleiman Hashimu Dungurawa, has debunked speculations that the Party’s 2023 Presidential Candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is decamping to ADC.

NNPP claimed that the questions of Kwankwaso joining ADC or any other party is just a miscalculation by politicians who are afraid of the leader of Kwankwasiyya Movements.

Dungurawa, who was speaking to Newsmen in Kano, Monday, hinted that Kwankwaso is not one of those pushover politicians who take decisions without appraising and deeply thinking about their consequences.

“Don’t forget, Kwankwaso today is the Political Leader of Northern Nigeria, and every Politician specifically in this region is looking up to him, so it will be malicious to say he is decamping out for now”.

2027: Current Govt may use courts to frustrate ADC – David Mark raises alarm

Published

The Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, David Mark, has alleged that the current administration is planning to use the courts to sabotage the party’s rising momentum.

The former Senate President raised the alarm in Abuja during a visit by the National Legal Support Group of the ADC, led by Abdullahi Abdurrahman.

Abdurrahman, at the meeting, revealed that no fewer than 310 lawyers have volunteered to defend the party in all ongoing and future legal cases across Nigeria.

According to him, the legal team has representation in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and is fully mobilised to tackle any legal challenges the ADC may face.

He said the party’s legal team includes prominent legal figures such as the ADC’s Legal Adviser, Peter Oyewole; former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN; and former Edo State Governor and legal scholar, Professor Oserheimen Osunbor.

“We are prepared to handle any case that may arise against ADC anywhere in the country,” Abdurrahman said.

Abdurrahman stated further that the lawyers believe in the ability of the current leadership to transform the party and make a meaningful contribution to national development.

He also extolled Senator Mark’s integrity, urging him to use his experience and statesmanship to guide the ADC to national prominence.

The leader of the National Legal Support Group urged the party’s Legal Adviser to provide necessary documents and updates on legal matters to help the team work effectively.

Responding, Oyewole assured the group that all legal protocols surrounding the recent coalition that birthed the new ADC were properly followed.

“There is no cause for alarm,” he stated.

Senator Mark, however, expressed concern about possible legal threats.

“ADC is the party to beat in 2027. The current administration may attempt to use the courts to frustrate our momentum,” he warned.

He urged Nigerians to support the ADC as a credible and patriotic alternative to lead the country forward.

Mark also commended the legal team for their dedication, encouraging them to remain alert and proactive as the party positions itself as a strong contender in the next general elections.

With a growing grassroots presence and a formidable legal structure, the ADC says it is ready to defend its vision and engage in the 2027 political contest.

Lagos LG Election: It’s A Sham Showing APC Game Plan For 2027, Says LP

Published

on

Labour Party (LP) has taken a swipe at the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) and All Progressives Congress (APC) over the conduct of Saturday’s local council election where APC reportedly clinched 57 council chairmanship seats and 375 out of 376 councillorship positions.

LP said the exercise was a sham and “a clear red flag – a troubling pointer to what the 2027 general elections may look like if this pattern is not disrupted.”

The party expressed concerns that every true democrat in Nigeria should be alarmed at such development.

Ken Asogwa, Spokesman to Labour Party’s acting national chairman, Nenadi Usman, in a statement on Monday, lamented that “The farce that played out in Lagos State on Saturday, 12th July 2025, under the guise of local government elections, has once again exposed the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a party allergic to democratic principles and due process.

The brazen self-allocation of all 57 council chairmanship seats and 375 out of 376 councillorship positions to the APC is not only shameless – it is unprecedented in Nigeria’s electoral history.”

He said LP has for long known that the APC, both at the national and sub-national levels, has little regard for civility or the rule of law, but “the audacity with which officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) collaborated openly with APC operatives represents a new low. Never in our democratic journey has such impunity been so openly executed.”

According to him, reports from agents of the party across Lagos State indicate that in most polling units, ballot boxes were already stuffed with pre-thumbprinted ballot papers before voting even commenced.

He also said in many instances, LASIEC officials reportedly arrived with pre-filled result sheets – long before any vote was cast.

“While no one expects electoral decency from the APC, we had hoped that they would at least attempt to feign fairness. Even that pretense has now been discarded,” he added.

The party therefore called in its supporters across Lagos to remain calm and law-abiding in the face of what it described as “monumental provocation.”

The statement called on “LASIEC immediately cancel this mockery of an election and organize a fresh, transparent process that reflects the genuine will of the people.”

“Lagos, known as the Centre of Excellence, should not be reduced to a theatre of electoral absurdity. As a microcosm of Nigeria, what happens in Lagos has ripple effects across the federation,” it stressed, adding that Labour Party “will not be silent.”
