Urgent action needed on AI threats to humanity — UN rights chief

Published

on

The United Nations rights chief Volker Turk warned Monday that artificial intelligence could pose an “existential threat to humanity,” demanding immediate action to reduce the risks.

Speaking before the UN Human Rights Council, Turk warned that humans currently faced “unfamiliar, even unprecedented” threats to their rights.

“The need for AI governance is widely acknowledged, but where is the action?” he asked, warning that “delay only benefits the massive tech companies, their owners and enablers.”

Turk decried that “a handful of men have almost unlimited power over AI, which we are repeatedly told has unimaginable computing capacity.

“They talk about freedom, but on closer inspection, this turns out to be little more than the freedom to exploit our data,” the rights chief said.

Turk warned in particular that “AI that escapes its testing environment or blackmails developers to prevent itself from being turned off, is AI that is too powerful.”

He appeared to be alluding to revelations in July that OpenAI agents had escaped supposedly controlled environments and had broken into servers of Hugging Face, a widely used platform where programmers share AI software.

That episode shook the tech world and revived calls for tighter regulation and oversight of AI.

Anthropic, Meta and other companies have reported similar incidents while testing agents.

“I share the concerns of industry insiders that advanced AI could pose an existential risk to humanity,” Turk said.

“I am calling here, today, for an all-out effort to put cast-iron guarantees in place around the safety and security of AI, before it is too late.”

The UN rights chief said he would be writing to AI companies in the coming days “to urge them to take the steps that are within their control to reduce risks now.”

At a minimum, he said, “we need countries hosting AI and those involved in its supply chains to come together around agreed red lines.”

“We need independent verification, and much stronger collaboration on security within the industry.

Amid the backlash trailing singer, Davido over his political stance, his logistics manager, Israel DMW, has declared support for the African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar ahead of the 2027 election.

Israel made his position known in a post on his Instagram handle on Friday, where he shared a picture of Atiku.

He wrote, “It is always far better, when a northern Nigeria rules. 15 trillion contract to one person alone?

“I’m voting Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. INEC, should please allow Nigerians to freely choose whoever they want to govern them in January 2027. A good name is far better than money. Nigerians should also please disregard the 2.5m votes coming out from Edo State.

“Adams Oshiomole remains the most loved and widely accepted governor in Edo State, wining 18 over 18, he could not deliver 500k votes to his party. His party failed to win in Edo two times during the presidential elections.”

MARESCA CLAIMS MAN CITY TEAM HAS GROWN CLOSER FOLLOWING GUILTY VERDICT

Published

on

Enzo Maresca believes Manchester City are “more together” after the club was found guilty of over 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules.

The club overcame a hostile Anfield atmosphere to beat 10-man Liverpool 3-0 last week in their first match since the verdict to make it six league wins out of six.

City boss Maresca said after the win the team needed to make their own “noise” to drown out the distraction of events off the pitch.

The Italian was bullish at his press conference on Friday despite this week’s 4-2 defeat in the Champions League by title-holders Paris Saint-Germain.

“I think probably since the noise we can see, I can see from my personal point of view the fans, the club, the team more together for sure,” he said.

Manchester City, who maintain their innocence, are appealing against the guilty verdict, delivered by an independent commission.

Maresca, who has repeatedly reiterated his “trust” in the club hierarchy, said he understood the intense focus on the issue but he warned against a rush to judgement.

“I don’t have any problem with people judging the situation – I think from my point of view the wise way to judge the situation is always to wait for the final words,” he said.

“But I can understand that now people need to speak about this situation.”

MAN UNITED DECIDE TWO DEFENSIVE TARGETS FOR 2027

Published

on

Manchester United are on the hunt for new defenders either in the January transfer market or next summer.

Michael Carrick focused on midfield reinforcements ahead of the 2026/27 season with Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans all arriving at Old Ttrafford.

The Red Devils were unable to lure Lewis Hall from Newcastle United, as the England international opted instead to sign a contract extension at St. James’ Park.

Defence will be the key area in the months ahead with trio Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez all out of contract in June 2027.

All three could move on, with Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Bournemouth left-back Adrien Truffert viewed as replacement options, as part of a combined £100M+ transfer outlay.

Branthwaite remains in contract extension talks with Everton, and his current deal runs until 2030, whilst Truffert is tied to the Cherries until the same date.

Both players would require assurances over playing time in Manchester, but Maguire and Martinez look set to go, with the latter forced to apologise after calling out the club’s transfer policy.
