2023: ‘They Suspended Strike Because Of Election’, Nigerians React To ASUU Suspension Of 8-Month Strike

Published

on

Nigerians have reacted to the suspension of the three-months strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Friday.

ASUU agreed to suspend their strike, which has lasted for eight-month, after the Union signed all agreements with the Federal Government, following a conciliatory meeting in Abuja.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, represented the Federal Government, while the lecturers were represented by the union’s president, Emmanuel Osodeke.

According to Ngige, both parties unanimously resolved the eight contentious issues that had prolonged the strike.

ASUU’s official Twitter handle also confirmed that lecturers are to resume on Friday.

“The NEC has decided that the STRIKE HAS BEEN SUSPENDED.

“Academic activities resume tomorrow,” the union quoted its president as saying in a tweet.

The latest development from ASUU has stirred diverse reactions from Nigerians online.

Here are some comments gathered from Twitter:

@Lukotony1 “Suspend? Which means they might still resume if agreement not implemented. Shame!!!

@Mkay “They’ve never really ended the strike, it has always been suspended.”

@Malizanna “It’s now just suspension, it’s just for the election, they might call in after getting their votes. Lets see “agreement reached and Called off”

@Djsp4all “This year’s anniversary is over. Till next four years. Suspending this incessant strikes is not the way forward. There should be an end to this. Our tertiary education has been messed up.”

@Iam_xtopher “Suspending strike Just 1 day to end collection of PVC.Good one but I think ASUU has a hidden agenda.”

@MrNoora “Asuu just wasted our semester for nothing i hope no strike again.”

@AzorgorN “This sabotage is not in favour of students, INEC closed collection of PVCs, ASSU called off strike.Could this be coincidence?

@Tobi_kalej_ “It’s because you want us to vote that’s why you suspended the strike huh. I’ll still not vote .”

Over 43,000 new voters register in Adamawa CVR exercise – INEC

Published

on

The ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise in Adamawa State, organised by the Independent National Electoral Commission, has recorded 43,380 new registrations as of July 7, 2026.

Local government-by-local government registration data made available to Saturday PUNCH by the Adamawa State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Mohammed Nura, showed that as of July 2, 2026, women accounted for 22,527 registrations, while men recorded 20,853, bringing the total to 43,380.

The REC, who was the chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Yobe State in 1994, said that the CVR exercise was organised to ensure that citizens who attained the age of 18 after the last general election are able to participate in future polls.

He said, “The main purpose of the CVR exercise is to ensure that youths who could not participate in the last general elections because they were underage are given the opportunity to participate after attaining the constitutional voting age of 18.

“We were supposed to end the exercise on July 7, 2026, but I still believe the headquarters may approve an extension since the elections are still some time away.”

Nura said the CVR exercise also enables those who have changed their place of residence to transfer their voter registration to their new locations, while those who have lost their Permanent Voter Cards can apply for replacements during the exercise.

He further stated that the exercise was designed to ensure that all eligible Nigerians are registered to participate in the general elections and elect their leaders.

The REC called on political parties in the state to mobilise members who are yet to obtain their voter cards to take advantage of the exercise and register.

Nura assured Nigerians that the commission was prepared to conduct one of the best general elections in the country’s history.
