Sultan, Kukah Urge Nigerians To Unite For Good Governance, Shun Religious Extremism
They stated this at the unveiling of the book, ‘Scars: Nigeria’s Journey and the Boko Haram Conundrum,’ authored by a former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Lucky Irabor, in Abuja, on Friday.
The Sultan urged Nigerians to work as one big family with different backgrounds to forge ahead.
The Sultan urged Nigerians to work as one big family with different backgrounds to forge ahead.
He, however, dismissed the perception that Islam is aimed at capturing power.
“I also want to correct the notion when Bishop (Matthew) Kukah talked about Islamism. You use some words maybe in the wrong manner, or somebody might feel Islamism is negative.
“Islamism is not aimed at seizing power at any particular forum. Islam is after good governance in society,” he stated.
“President Goodluck Jonathan was President; we gave him 100 per cent support. Throughout his presidency, nobody said anything negative against him; he knows that, and he is here.
“So, Islamism is not what you think it is; it is a wrong notion that you are bringing up here that it is to seize power. It is not to seize power. We’re after good governance,” he added.
The monarch noted he had been accused of speaking against the second term of former President Muhammadu Buhari when he spoke about Islam and good governance in 2011, an action he said he took because it was the right thing to do.
“In September 2019, I gave a talk on Islam and good governance in Nigeria. President Buhari was just going for his second term.
“After giving my talk, the following day, the papers carried it [that] I was aiming at President Buhari’s second term because I said things that a good Muslim should do as a leader and what he should not do.
He also explained that Muslims are guided by a code of conduct, adding that Islam abhors extremism.
“And these are written. So, we have a code of conduct; we have ways and means of life. Anybody coming outside these to say things that he really doesn’t know about is not for Islam because Islam abhors extremism.
“You cannot be an extremist and then claim to be a good Muslim. So, let’s learn some of these issues, and then when we are talking about insecurity in our great country, we have to be careful in how we say things, how we present them.
“So, let’s come closer as one big family with different backgrounds to forge ahead to make this country a better country, because there is nothing anybody can do,” the Sultan stated.
On his part, Kukah called for mutual respect as an ingredient of nation-building.
“I’d like to use this to speak to my Muslim brothers, especially from northern Nigeria. Islamism, that is what is called political theology in Christianity, is the instrumentalisation, the skewed usage and manipulation of religion as a tool for governance in a democracy.
“There is a way that good Muslims can participate in a democracy, and good Christians can participate in a democracy. But the idea that we want to use religion to enforce power is what Islamism is. It has become destructive to the religion itself in this day and age,” he said.
“Yes, they are killing Christians, but when are we going to come to a point where they are killing Nigerians? So Islamism threatens to destroy the foundations of Islam as a sacred religion, and we must insist collectively, because this is where Boko Haram started from.
“The point I am making here is that we, the religious leaders and the political actors, must come to terms with the fact that there are boundaries. If these boundaries are not respected, you can pay the Imam, you can pay the bishop, you can pay whatever money you want. Good governance is not about how much we are dispensing,” the cleric stated.
The Catholic bishop also noted that extremism poses a threat to the unity of any nation, hence the need for unity.
“The Egyptians dealt with Islamism when it reared its ugly head, and the people of Algeria did so in 1993. There are many Boko Haram sympathisers who are not immediately visible to us, but we know that people with fat bank accounts are funding them.
“Maybe there was a time that it didn’t matter, but we have come to a point where injury to one is injury to all. We must work towards a point because Islamism still poses a serious danger,” Kukah added.

Stop denigrating Tinubu with baseless sovereign debt alarm – Presidency cautions critics
The Presidency has cautioned Nigerians against denigrating President Bola Tinubu with baseless sovereign debt alarms.
President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said the President and his economic team were responsible leaders.
He was reacting to a post by @StatiSense listing Africa’s most indebted countries in 2026.
It posted: “Africa’s most indebted countries – 2026. Public debt as % of GDP.
“Sudan — 169.1%
“Senegal — 132.3%
“Mozambique — 106.1%
“Cabo Verde — 95.9%
“Republic of Congo — 91.3%
“Egypt — 87.0%
“Mauritius — 86.5%
“Gabon — 86.1%
“Tunisia — 84.9%
“South Africa — 78.9%
“Nigeria — 35.5%
“Several African economies carry public debt approaching or exceeding the size of their annual economic output.
“Sudan stands out at 169.1% of GDP, meaning its government debt is estimated at roughly 1.7 times the size of its economy. #Statisense (IMF).”
Reacting, Onanuga commended Tinubu and his economic team for the feat.
He posted on X: “Another stubborn fact for those whose stock in trade is to denigrate Nigeria and the Tinubu presidency and raise baseless alarms about our sovereign debt.
“Our country is not among Africa’s most indebted countries. Unlike the countries listed here, our debt burden is about 35 per cent of our GDP. Kudos to PBAT and the economic team for responsible leadership.”

Afenifere Expresses Dismay Over Abduction Of Prospective Corps Members
The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has expressed dismay over the kidnapping of graduates who were going for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.
Twenty persons, armed with their call-up letters, took off from the Samonda area of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, and were among those kidnapped at a spot near Umunoha in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State on Thursday.
Their buses were travelling from Ibadan towards Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and Bende, Abia State.
In a statement on Monday, the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, also sympathised with families of the victims and proffered ideas on how to put a stop to such incidents.
While condemning the incident in its entirety, Afenifere observed that the risk of being kidnapped would greatly reduce if one did not have to travel such a long distance for the purpose of youth service “given the prevailing situation in the country”.
Ajayi said Afenifere, since as far back as 2021, has been calling on the Federal Government to review the NYSC policy with a view to enabling corps members to serve in their respective states or areas of domicile.
“The idea here is to reduce the tendency by a prospective corper to travel from one part of the country to another for the purpose of having to serve the country under the NYSC policy,” the statement read in part.
“We have repeated this call several times especially whenever there are incidents of corpers being kidnapped or attacked in one way or the other. Some national newspapers have even written editorials endorsing our position.”
But the Afenifere spokesman added that “thankfully, President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, in a statement on his X handle of Wednesday, July 1, 2026, announced that he has directed the Federal Ministries of Youth Development and Justice to begin the process of amending the NYSC Act and its subsidiary regulations to give legal backing to the reforms that were approved by the Federal Executive Council at its meeting on Monday, June 29, 2026.”
It urged those concerned to expedite actions on effecting necessary amendments to the NYSC Act so that corpers would be able to serve in their respective states or at least in neighbouring states within the same geopolitical zone.
The Yoruba apex organisation called on the NYSC to, “pending the necessary amendment of the corps’ Act, allow graduates to serve within their states of origin, states of residence or states within their geopolitical zones. Exigency or security imperative can be cited as the reason for this if anyone challenges the organisation for taking such a step.”
The body urged federal security agencies and the Oyo and Imo state governments to quicken actions on rescuing the victims within the shortest possible time.
It said, “The method used to rescue victims of Oriire abduction can be employed in a modified form in line with the peculiar situation.”
In a similar vein, Afenifere commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the creation of new Army formations in Zamfara, Kebbi, Oyo, and Osun states with a view to shortening the response period and bringing troops closer to vulnerable communities. These new formations are in addition to the four new army divisional headquarters announced in July by the Presidency.
“The four new divisional army headquarters raised such divisions in the country from eight to 12. The new headquarters and their locations as announced then were: 5 Division Headquarters: Located in Makurdi, Benue State; 9 Division Headquarters: Located in Ilorin, Kwara State; 10 Division Headquarters: Located in Jalingo, Taraba State; and 83 Division Headquarters: Located in Benin City, Edo State.
Afenifere was of the opinion that this increase in military bases would strengthen security surveillance and quicken responses to security emergencies.
“As for a lasting solution to kidnapping and banditry, Afenifere again advocated for the enforcement of the 2022 Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act.
“The Act provides an appropriate legal framework for detecting, preventing, prohibiting, and punishing acts of terrorism, terrorist financing, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. “Strict enforcement of the Act will reduce the menace of terrorism to the barest minimum,” Afenifere said.

Rainbow Coalition: I Don’t Have Problem With Wike, It’s APC All The Way In Ondo – Aiyedatiwa
The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has said the state remains firmly with the All Progressives Congress (APC), while clarifying that he has no problem with the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, or the Rainbow Coalition he is associated with.
Aiyedatiwa made the clarification on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday while responding to questions about the cross-party coalition being championed by Wike.
The governor said although he maintains a good relationship with the former Rivers State governor, his political allegiance in Ondo remains with the APC.
“In my state, it is APC all the way, that does not mean that I don’t have relationship with Wike. I don’t have any problem with Wike,” Aiyedatiwa said.
He, however, said there was nothing wrong with the Rainbow Coalition, noting that politics revolves around interests, relationships and alliances.
Aiyedatiwa likened the coalition to the various support groups backing President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, saying there was nothing wrong with such a platform if its objective was to support the President.
“Politics is about interest, relationships, alliances if you like. So, Rainbow Coalition being led by His Excellency Honourable Minister Nyesom Wike, there is nothing wrong in having coalition or alliances, it’s all about interests, who wants to be part of that, you choose.
“There is freedom of association of being a member of one group, coalition or another just as we have a lot of support groups supporting the president. So, if Rainbow Coalition is also in form of a support group too for the president, what is wrong in that, nothing.”
Wike, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been associated with the Rainbow Coalition, a cross-party political platform supporting President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
However, the Progressives Governors Forum (PGF), the umbrella body of APC governors, has rejected the idea of a cross-party political arrangement involving APC members, arguing that such an alliance could undermine the President’s re-election bid.
Wike has meanwhile reaffirmed his support for Tinubu’s re-election, saying securing victory for the President in the 2027 presidential election remains his major political priority.
He has also rejected allegations that the Rainbow Coalition was formed to destabilise existing political parties.
