South Africa’s Broos Vows ‘No Mercy’ In AFCON Clash Against Cameroon
South Africa coach Hugo Broos has promised to show “no mercy” to Cameroon when he comes up against his former side in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday.
Broos will lead Bafana Bafana out at Al Medina Stadium in Rabat against the nation he led to an unexpected AFCON triumph in Gabon in 2017.
“Tomorrow’s game is surely a special game for me. If you win an AFCON with a country then a part of them stays in your heart but tomorrow I can’t have mercy for them because I am the coach of South Africa now and I want to win the game,” Belgian Broos told reporters Saturday in the Moroccan capital.
“They are a very good team, a young team, and they have a good fighting spirit and mentality which means if we want to beat them we will have to be at our best.”
Cameroon took seven points from a possible nine in the group stage in Morocco despite a chaotic build-up to the tournament.
Coach Marc Brys was sacked by the football federation president and Indomitable Lions legend Samuel Eto’o only a few weeks before their opening game, with David Pagou appointed as his replacement.
“I would have preferred to face Cameroon in the final –- maybe now is a little too soon,” Broos said.
“I was curious to see Cameroon with all the changes in their team and I have been surprised. They did not have much preparation time but the coach has done a good job and for us it will be a difficult match.”
He added: “No mercy tomorrow! You can be sure. I have to win that game, that is all that counts.”
Meanwhile, the 73-year-old expressed anger at tournament organisers for forcing his side to train at the Moroccan national team’s facility, a 45-minute drive away from their hotel in Rabat.
Whoever wins on Sunday will face Morocco in the quarter-finals, should the hosts see off outsiders Tanzania in their last-16 tie.
“I don’t understand why CAF (the Confederation of African Football) allowed that. I have to say that because it makes me unhappy,” Broos complained.
Bafana Bafana, who have qualified for this year’s World Cup, are hoping to at least match their run to the semi-finals at the last Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast in 2024.
But their coach admits that could be a tall order given the depth of quality left in the competition.
“It was the ambition when we came here, to do at least as well as two years ago, but I said this tournament would be much more difficult.
“At the last AFCON a lot of big teams were knocked out early, but this time they are all here, which means to get to the final, even the semi-finals, it will be much more difficult, but our ambition remains intact.”

Liverpool’s record signing Lucca Brughmans pulls off man of the match performance for Genk
Lucca Brughmans has been impressing for Genk whilst on loan from Liverpool following his summer move.
Liverpool made Brughmans the world’s most expensive goalkeeper under the age of 23 this summer as they snapped up the 18 year old in a £30M deal from Belgian side Genk.
Brughmans played his first game for Genk after signing for Liverpool on Sunday, keeping a clean sheet against Anderlecht and collecting the man of the match award as he posed after the final whistle with a huge grin on his face.
Brughmans is set to become the club’s second-most expensive goalkeeper behind Alisson Becker, whose £65M transfer from Roma in 2018 is the second-biggest in football history.
The 6’7″ stopper helped extend Genk’s unbeaten run in the top flight to four matches and also pushed the side to keep their second straight clean sheet after a 4-0 win over SK Beveren in late August.”
With four saves and nine recoveries, Brughmans was certainly impressive and supporters are beginning to see why the Reds made the move for him before the summer window closed.
Speaking on the switch to Merseyside this week, revealing that he is staying humble despite being tipped to replace Alisson next season.
“Last weekend was hectic,” Brughmans told Nieuwsblad. “I only saw Liverpool’s training complex. It was already quite late, so I had to undergo my medical tests immediately and then sign.
“Fortunately, I was able to rejoin the group for training on Monday. That way, I could quickly return to reality. My situation doesn’t feel any different either. I know how they view me at KRC Genk. To them, I am still the same Lucca as before my transfer.”

Odegaard Scores Winner As Arsenal Overcome Chelsea In London derby
Arsenal came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1 in the first real major Premier League heavyweight clash of the new campaign – in an early contender for game of the season.
Both London rivals produced a Sunday afternoon treat which rubberstamped Arsenal’s credentials as the team to beat – and Chelsea’s as worthy challengers for the top honours.
A pulsating game started right from the off as Morgan Rogers – sought after by Arsenal this summer – crashed new club Chelsea ahead after just 77 seconds. That poked the bear of the champions – who produced a response.
After Riccardo Calafiori saw a goal disallowed for offside, former Blue Kai Havertz got his fourth goal against his old club for Arsenal with a strike from the edge of the box.
But despite a dominant Arsenal display, Chelsea still went inches away from a second as Rogers curled wide and Pedro Neto hit the post.
Arsenal turned the tide after the break as Martin Odegaard scored his second goal of the season via a slick team move – which was a carbon copy of the attack that saw him score in the Community Shield against Man City.
And despite some half chances for Chelsea, it was Arsenal who looked more likely to add to their tally – as Emiliano Martinez smartly kept out Bukayo Saka and Ezri Konsa in quick succession. That was until Estevao produced an 89th-minute curler – which needed tipping over by David Raya.
The result means Arsenal stay perfect – level with Manchester City after three games. But Chelsea have shown they will not be far behind…

EPL: Arsenal Battle Chelsea In Emirates Showdown
The reigning champions meet the assigned closest challengers in Sunday’s Premier League main event, which sees Arsenal welcome Chelsea to the Emirates Stadium for a mouth-watering London derby.
Neither side has slipped up in any competition yet this season, but at least one 100% record will cease to exist when Mikel Arteta and Xabi Alonso shake hands.
On-field elation and off-field exasperation has been the theme for Arsenal since the new campaign kicked off, as a gritty 1-0 triumph over Aston Villa on August 31 was soon overshadowed by an activity-less transfer deadline day.
While Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta sanctioned multiple attacking exits – Gabriel Jesus, Ethan Nwaneri and new record sale Gabriel Martinelli – not a single reinforcement arrived on September 1, as the Gunners failed to seduce Julian Alvarez into a U-turn and opted not to firm up their interest in Malick Fofana.
One all-too common injury in the final third now has the potential to derail Arsenal’s title defence – at least in the eyes of glass-half-empty Gooners – but three wins, three clean sheets and seven goals from the current crop is hardly bad going.
However, three is both a crowd and a collector’s item for Arsenal, who have only won their first three matches of a Premier League season once in the last 21 years – that streak came in the 2022-23 campaign.
Capital clashes have been the hosts’ forte in recent years, though, as Arsenal have avoided defeat in each of their last 16 Premier League London derbies, earning 12 victories and playing out four stalemates.
At the opposite end of the perfection scale, Chelsea’s unblemished record in 2026-27 thus far has been built on an astounding attack rather than a diligent defence, evidenced by a league-high 12 goals being scored in the Blues’ two outings.
Chelsea’s unmissable 4-3 success over Brighton & Hove Albion belongs in the ‘Prime Barclays’ category, as Xabi Alonso’s men raced into a 3-0 lead, were pegged back to 3-2, restored a two-goal advantage and survived an injury-time scare to prevail.
Only goal difference is keeping the visitors below Arsenal in the Premier League table at the time of writing, and Chelsea could now win their opening four games of a season in all tournaments for the first time since 2016-17 – Antonio Conte’s title-winning campaign.
Fast starts have been key to the Blues’ success so far, as Alonso’s men are just the second Premier League team in history to score in the first four minutes of their opening two games of a season, following in the footsteps of the 2002-03 Bolton Wanderers unit.
However, Chelsea have been bested in each of their last three matches against Arsenal, who have gone over five years without suffering defeat to their London rivals, last ending up on the wrong end of the scoreline in August 2021.
