It appears all is not well with the Lagos State Governor, Babajide and Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa in what seemed to be a showdown between the executive and legislative arms of government after the latter rejected 17 of the governor’s nominees for screening and approval.
It would be recalled that last Wednesday, Obasa confirmed 22 out of the 39 cabinet nominees presented by Sanwo-Olu. This has never happened in the history of the state. Many observers even see it as unprecedented.
The decision of the lawmakers shows a growing animosity between the executive and legislative which is not good for the growth and development of the state.
Interestingly, some of the nominees rejected by the lawmakers include; Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, Prof. Akin Abayomi, Mr. Yomi Oluyomi, Mrs. Folashade Ambrose, Ms. Barakat Bakare, Mr. Gbenga Omotosho, Engr. Olalere Odusote, Dr. Rotimi Fashola, Mrs. Bolaji Cecilia Dada and Mr. Sam Egube.
Others include Mr. Olalekan Fatodu, Mrs. Solape Hammond, Mr. Mosopefolu George, Engr. Aramide Adeyoye, Mr. Seun Osiyemi, Mr Rotimi Ogunwuyi and Dr. Olumide Oluyinka.
However, Thepledge gathered exclusively from a source that the reasons why the Lagos House of Assembly rejected the 17 nominees was due to the fact that most of them all left their responsibilities at a point when the All Progressives Congress (APC) had lost the state to the Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi during the last Presidential election.
It was learnt that the House accused them of travelling out of the country at a time all hands should be on deck to help the party wade off the threat of the Labour Party.
“It’s not a secret that many of the nominees were not on ground during the election. They did not only absent themselves during the campaign, they also failed to contribute to the campaign fund. We therefore do not think they should benefit from where they did not sow, one of the lawmakers who craved anonymity told our reporter.
Besides, some of them were also accused of not relating with their constituents in order to share ideas on how to defeat the opposition during the presidential and governorship elections. It was gathered that those who couldn’t travel out of the country, relocated to the eyebrows of Lagos and distanced themselves from the people.
However, this didn’t go down well with the Lagos lawmakers as they vowed that it won’t be business as usual this time around. They insisted that nominees will be scrutinized and not allowed to just bow and go.
The race for the Speakership was said to have also played a key role in the current face-off between Sanwo-Olu and Obasa. Thepledge had reported that the governor had backed Hon. Abiodun Tobun to halt Obasa’s third term ambition. When Obasa eventually secured his third term he vowed to frustrate the governor in the house.
According to a source: “The Speaker was not unmindful that the governor did not support his ambition to come back to office, so what we are seeing is a payback time for the Speaker. Do not also forget that there were a lot of reservations protests from party members and leaders when the list of nominees came out. It is therefore easy to connect the decision of the lawmakers as a reflection of the mood in the party.
“The lawmakers are not comfortable that they were not consulted by the governor before the list was submitted. And the list did not meet the expectations of both the lawmakers and party leaders. Hence, it was easy for them to reject 17 nominees. It was a bold statement by the lawmakers that they cannot be taken for a ride by the governor”.
As Lagosians await the next step of the governor, it was gathered that APC leaders are already making moves to resolve the impasse by waiting for the Sanwo-Olu to come back from his trip outside the country, to arrange a meeting between him and the Speaker.
“Not to worry, the APC has a way of resolving its in-house crisis. It will surely be resolved in a give and take way. But lessons have been learnt. It’s an unwarranted crisis which we would not want to repeat in the future. We’re members of the same party and we must find a way of resolving differences before they get of hand”, says a party leader.

OsunDecides2026: ‘Protect our votes, respect our mandate,’ Adeleke urges Tinubu, security operatives
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has urged President Bola Tinubu to direct security agencies deployed for the governorship election to protect the integrity of the electoral process as collation of results begins.
Adeleke made the appeal in a post on X on Saturday evening, expressing concern over alleged attempts to disrupt or hijack collation centres across the state.
Addressing Tinubu, the governor said, “It is imperative that you use your good office to issue a clear warning to the heads of security agencies deployed to protect the good people of Osun State and safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.”
He said reports of alleged attempts to disrupt collation centres by politicians were “deeply concerning and unacceptable,” given the number of security personnel deployed for the election.
Adeleke urged the President to reiterate his commitment to ensuring that votes cast by Osun residents count and that the final outcome reflects their choice.
“I therefore implore you to reiterate the commitment made to the people of Osun State that their votes will count and that the outcome of this election will reflect their genuine choice,” he said.
The governor specifically called on the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, Nigerian Army and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to adhere to the directive, while urging that the Independent National Electoral Commission receive the necessary support to complete the process.
“The Nigeria Police, DSS, Nigerian Army, NSCDC and other security agencies must strictly adhere to this directive, while INEC must be given every necessary support to conclude the process and deliver a credible and transparent outcome,” Adeleke said.
He added, “The people of Osun State have spoken with one voice, and their voices must be heard. Their votes must be protected, and their mandate must be respected.”
Adeleke also commended voters for turning out for the election and urged security agencies to remain vigilant as results move from polling units to wards and local government collation centres.
“Against all odds, the people of Osun State have turned out in large numbers and are speaking with one voice. The safety and protection of our people is paramount,” he said.
“I commend the security agencies deployed for this election and urge them to remain vigilant as we move into the collation of results; from polling units to wards to local government areas.”
The governor further called on INEC to maintain high standards throughout the collation process.
“I also call on INEC to uphold the highest standards of integrity throughout this process,” he said.
Nigerian musician, David Adeleka, also known as Davido has asked President Bola Tinubu to call members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress, APC, to order.
Davido made the call in a post on his verified X handle on Saturday as sorting and announcement of election results were ongoing.
His call stemmed from the allegation that ‘thugs’ of the Osun State Chapter of the APC stormed GOF junction, Osogbo the state capital to disrupt Ward 4 and 5 election results.
“Mr President, call your people to order. Osun APC thugs have invaded GOF junction, Osogbo to disrupt Ward 4 and 5 results.
“They have seen defeat and they are now trying to destroy ballot papers and boxes. Osogbo people will resist them.
“They want to start attacking everywhere. Osun people, mount your votes,” he tweeted.
The Accord Party has secured victory at the polling unit of former Osun State Deputy Governor, Senator Iyiola Omisore, in the ongoing governorship election.
Results published on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Result Viewing Portal, IReV, showed that Accord polled 131 votes at Polling Unit 003, Ife Ward 1, Moore, St. Gabriel Primary School, Ife East Local Government Area.
The All Progressives Congress, APC, came second with 85 votes, while the African Democratic Congress, ADC, received 10 votes. Other political parties recorded only marginal votes.
The result adds to a series of early victories recorded by Accord in the election.
Earlier, the party also won at the polling unit of former Governor Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola in Okuku, Odo-Otin Local Government Area, where it secured 125 votes.
At the same polling unit, APC garnered 85 votes, while ADC polled five votes.
INEC has continued to upload results to the IReV portal as collation progresses across the state.
