Reps Summon KFC For Discrimination Against Son Of Former Governor, Gbenga Daniel With Disability

Published

The House of Representatives Committee on Disabilities has summoned the management of Kentucky Fried Chicken, KFC, over allegations of discriminatory treatment towards Mr Adebola Daniel, a person living with a disability and son of former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel.

Chairman of the committee, Bashiru Ayinla, announced this decision while briefing newsmen at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, on Tuesday.

Ayinla, representing Oshodi/Isolo-1 Federal Constituency, Lagos State, vowed that the committee would ensure that any violation of the Disability Act is met with appropriate punishment under the law.

Recall that the incident in question occurred at the KFC outlet within the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, where Daniel, a wheelchair user, was reportedly denied entry with the manager allegedly stating, “No wheelchair allowed.”

Expressing his dismay, Ayinla stated the gravity of the situation, saying, “The discriminatory incident sheds light on the challenges being faced by individuals with disabilities in Nigeria. This treatment is unacceptable and is a violation of the Disability Act.

“We have invited KFC and there will be an investigation which will be based on House rules.

“The discriminatory incident, highlighted by Mr Daniel’s public account, sheds light on the challenges being faced by individuals with disabilities in Nigeria.

“Mr Daniel, a wheelchair user, faced humiliation when he was refused entry to the KFC outlet, with the manager stating, ‘No wheelchair allowed.’ This treatment is unacceptable and goes against the principles of inclusivity and respect and it is a violation of the Disability Act.”

The Committee Chairman pointed out the importance of enforcing the Disability Act to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities, stressing the need for compliance with its provisions, particularly regarding access to public spaces and employment quotas.

According to him, the son of the ex-governor and serving senator, Daniel, recounted his experience at the KFC outlet of the airport in a series of tweets posted on Wednesday via his X handle, @DebolaDaniel, saying, “Being disabled often rolls over my spirit, leaving behind a trail of shattered dignity and forgotten humanity. Nowhere more so than in Nigeria.”

Ayinla added that the denial of individuals with disabilities access to public spaces is not only disrespectful “but also undermines ongoing efforts to implement the Disability Act”.

“The case of Mr Adebola Daniel is one in millions of other unreported cases of such abuses and injustices against people with disabilities.

“This will no longer be tolerated by the governments at all levels. Any establishments within the shore of our country irrespective of owners’ status should take note. Enough is enough!

“The Discrimination against People with Disabilities Prohibition Act 2018, passed by the National Assembly, aims to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities.

“However, compliance with this Act has been lacking since the grace period ended in January,” the lawmaker added.

Ayinla pledged the readiness of the House to engage with communities to kick-start the full implementation of the Disability Act, stating that “key provisions such as access to public buildings, employment quotas, and welfare promotion for persons with disabilities must be enforced to ensure their rights are upheld”.

He also urged state governments to domesticate the Disability Act.

Addressing concerns about the committee’s motives, Ayinla affirmed that the lawmakers’ action was not influenced by the status of the individual involved but rather by the broader imperative of promoting inclusivity and upholding the rights of all citizens, regardless of their physical abilities.

UK Probe Finds No Stolen Nigerian Funds Linked To Diezani –Ozekhome

Published

on

Legal luminary, Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN, has debunked persistent allegations of corruption against former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, asserting that no stolen Nigerian funds have ever been traced to her by UK authorities.

In a statement released on Sunday titled, ‘There is no such thing as Diezani Loot,’ Ozekhome stated, “The immediate past Executive Chairman of the EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa, confirmed to her lawyers that no funds from the coffers of the Federal Government of Nigeria have been found ever stolen by her.”

He said that the former minister, who has been under investigation by UK authorities since October 2015, has not been charged with misappropriating public funds despite nearly a decade of scrutiny.

According to Ozekhome, Alison-Madueke’s prolonged ordeal stems from baseless allegations, unverified narratives, and public vilification rather than concrete evidence.

“DAM (Diezani Alison-Madueke) has continued to face relentless defamation and misinformation. Her name is routinely linked to allegations and properties, like the recent case of the ‘Galactica Yacht,’ which she neither owned nor ever set eyes on,” he said.

Ozekhome referenced court rulings to support his client’s case, particularly a decision by the Federal High Court, Abuja, which cleared parties linked to a Strategic Alliance Agreement (SAA) of wrongdoing.

“Let us be very clear about this: the issues of non-payment of the cash-calls that subsequently arose in the Atlantic Energy SAAs had nothing whatsoever to do with the initial contract award which followed due process and was properly made.

“Those issues arose as a direct result of the manner of operational implementation and supervision and had nothing whatsoever to do with DAM. She was never involved in any way or manner.

“As a matter of fact in April 2014, as soon as she was brought to her attention by an external multinational head that there were some issues regarding the Atlantic Energy SAAs, she immediately took strong and direct action by promptly alerting Mr. President, the Permanent Secretary (PS), of MPR and the GMD-NNPC, in writing, and directed that an immediate two-week investigation be carried out.

“Following the resulting investigative report, DAM again directed in writing to the PS, MPR and the GMD-NNPC, with Mr. President’s knowledge and approval, that a process for the recovery of the unpaid cash-call be immediately put in place,” he said.

He noted that the yacht in question was reportedly forfeited by businessman Kola Aluko, who had valid contracts with the NNPC.

The lawyer emphasised that Alison-Madueke’s role as minister was limited to endorsing contracts already vetted by the NNPC, adding, “She merely followed due process as required by her statutory duties.”

Ozekhome also shed light on the former minister’s health struggles, revealing that she underwent chemotherapy for cancer shortly before being detained in the UK.

“Despite battling for her life and surviving on goodwill from friends and family, she has faced unrelenting public scrutiny and baseless accusations,” he lamented.

The senior advocate called on the public to allow the UK legal process to take its course without interference or prejudice, stressing the importance of fair hearing.

“Let the law take its natural course. It is time to stop the vilification of an innocent Nigerian citizen,” he added.

In the light of recent news reports, Dr. Oba Otudeko categorically refutes the claims concerning his role in FBN Holdings and will aggressively defend his reputation.

He has built directly from scratch and has worked with others to build many of Nigeria’s most successful companies. He is not interested in serving in an executive capacity in any organization in Nigeria or elsewhere, neither is he interested in serving in a non-executive capacity on any board asides those he currently sits on. This includes any possibility of returning to the board of FBN Holdings Plc, which appears to be the focus of the recent unfortunate news barrage. FBN Holdings, a legacy institution built over 130 years, holds a special place in Dr. Otudeko’s heart. He trusts this strong foundation to guide the institution into the next era of success.

Dr. Oba Otudeko is confident that the truth will prevail in due course and looks forward to addressing these claims in the appropriate forum.

Gunmen have shot and killed a 54-year-old prophet of the Celestial Church of Christ’s Eagle Parish in the Odo Eran Idiroko area of the Ogun State.

The gunmen opened fire on the cleric during an active Sunday service and then escaped.

The police spokesperson in the state Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Abeokuta the state capital on Sunday.

“On January 19, 2025, around 10:30 AM, the divisional police officer of Idiroko received a report that someone had been killed at a Celestial Church located along Old Baggage Road, Odo Eran, Idiroko,” she said.

She said that police officers got to the scene and discovered one Yomi Adetula, a 54-year-old man, lying face up in a pool of blood that stained his white celestial garment.

She also confirmed that upon closer inspection, his body was found to be riddled with bullets, and his head was severely damaged with an axe to verify that he was indeed dead.

“During the police investigation, it was revealed that three men entered the church, brandished a long double-barreled gun, aimed at their target, and fired a shot that caused chaos, and the assailant escaped.”

According to her, no arrest has been made but she maintained that the police is actively working to apprehend the fleeing suspects who escaped from the church toward the border area.

The body of the dead prophet has been deposited at the General Hospital morgue in Ilaro.
