Ramadan: Buhari Cautions Against Rituals That Could Spread Coronavirus
President Muhammadu Buhari has sent his best wishes to Muslims in the country and all over the world as they begin this year’s 30-day fast following the sighting of the moon.
“I congratulate all Muslims as they commence this year’s Ramadan fast which is depicted by self-denial, universal brotherhood, austerity and helping relatives and needy people,” said the President in a statement on Friday night by Garba Shehu, his spokesman.
President Buhari described Ramadan 2020 as a challenge, falling in the period of the global pandemic, which has spread to more than 200 nations, with virtually all countries advising citizens to avoid large gatherings and have their prayers and meals (suhoor and iftar) individually or with family at home.
“In this Ramadan period, the kind of socializing you are used to now risks spreading the Coronavirus,” the President cautioned Muslims, while enjoining them to refrain from those Ramadan rituals and traditions such as group meals and congregational prayers that have been put on hold by Muslim religious authorities all over the world.
President Buhari urged Muslims to endure and not to use the Coronavirus as an excuse not to participate in the Ramadan fast, unless such abstention is warranted by the excuses clearly outlined by health and religious authorities.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has changed the logo displayed for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, on its official portal, with the commission now reflecting the party’s blue-background “Two Fingers Up” logo.
The updated logo features a blue background, a two-finger victory sign and the red “NDC” inscription.
The development follows a September 8, 2026 judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which directed INEC to approve, upload and use the modified logo in elections conducted by the commission.
The dispute arose after NDC alleged that INEC initially uploaded the modified logo but later removed it and reverted to the old logo used when the party was originally registered.
The party subsequently approached the court, seeking an order compelling INEC to recognise and use the modified logo.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik ruled that the modified design, which was adopted at the NDC’s first National Executive Council meeting on March 25, 2026, should be recognised as the party’s official logo.
Following the judgment, NDC leaders directed the party’s candidates and members to use the modified logo on campaign materials, including banners.
Lagos State has the highest number of registered voters in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
The figures were disclosed by INEC Chairman, Prof Joash Amupitan, on Tuesday during the commission’s World Press Conference in Abuja.
The event was held as part of INEC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections.
INEC said Lagos has 7,488,633 registered voters, followed by Kano State with 6,000,570.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, has explained why he would rather support President Bola Tinubu than Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
Speaking during an interview on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, Lawal said Nigeria could collapse chaotically if Atiku becomes president in 2027.
Recall that Lawal recently joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, after resigning from the ADC following the emergence of Atiku as its presidential candidate.
“I’d rather go with Bola than Atiku because when Nigeria crashes with Bola, it might be an orderly crash, but with Atiku, it would be a chaotic one,” Lawal said.
According to him, the former vice president is not a good man, attributing his position to his previous experience working with Atiku.
“I wanted to work for Atiku. I had the belief that, given the way we are suffering in the North, we should not surrender the presidency; that, at least, our own man would, if nothing else, stop the decline we are in,” he added.
The former SGF accused Atiku of giving instructions and later reversing them after consulting with other people.
“Everything you do with him, there’s chaos,” Lawal stated.
