Jibrin Samuel Okutepa, SAN, a member of Peter Obi Labour Party’s legal team at the Presidential Election Tribunal, has described as fake the news alleging the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Olukayode Ariwoola disguised on a wheel chair to meet President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He debunked Peter Obi’s involvement in the purported story.

On Thursday, online news media alleged that the CJN met Tinubu in London to influence the judiciary ahead of a presidential election tribunal hearing.

But on Friday, the Director of Press at the Supreme Court, Festus Akande, in a statement, debunked the news saying it is false.

Okutepa, in a series of tweets on official Twitter handle on Friday, said those linking the former Governor of Anambra State to the fake news are being mischievous and satanic.

He said Peter Obi has respect and confidence in the judiciary that is why he approached the court for justice.

He urged Nigerians not to bring the judiciary into disrepute and shame.

According to him, citizens must respect the men and women on the Bench.

He added that those who feel wronged about the rotten eggs in the system should channel their criticism through civil manners, not resorting to lies.

“That I am in the legal team of HE Peter Obi does not stop me from speaking the truth. HE Peter Obi does not represent and does not promote fake news. Those attributing the news of CJN disguising to meet a politician [to] HE Peter Obi are mischievous and satanic,” he posted

Tinubu Meets Afenifere Leaders, Vows Tough Action Against Threats To Nigeria’s Sovereignty

Published

on

President Bola Tinubu says those who think they can threaten the sovereignty of the country will have themselves to blame.

The President stated this when he met with the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, at the Presidential Villa Abuja on Wednesday.

The group was led by its leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti.

President Tinubu said his administration is tackling the myriad of security challenges in the country, including terrorism and banditry.

He said that unlike in the years past when insurgents laid claim to parts of the country, terrorism has been significantly degraded.

“I can tell you this afternoon that we are achieving success, and there is improvement. From hoisting flags on Nigeria’s properties and sovereignty, we have degraded terrorism to a level that they could not threaten the sovereignty of this country any longer,” Tinubu said.

He also vowed to deal with banditry and kidnapping in the country.

He insisted that his government would never pay ransom to kidnappers, citing the case of the rescue of the Kuriga students in Kaduna State as an example.

“The banditry and kidnapping they have resorted into will also be defeated. I declined any ransom, no payment of ransom whatsoever. We are taking the battle to them, and we are gaining results more rapidly thank ever before,” he said.

The president also disclosed the plans of his administration to establish effective forest guards that will be fully in control of the forests in the country.

Earlier, while presenting the speech of Afenifere, the Oluabo of Ilu-Abo and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae, asked President Tinubu to look into the command structure of federal security agencies to ensure equity in the posting and deployment of senior officers.

The group said equity should also be reflected in the recruitment of security personnel from the bottom up.

It also reaffirmed its support for the establishment of state police, noting that it will enhance the security of lives and properties.

“It is not good for the future of our country if one section or a few sections of the country has some of the security agencies, as it were, in their pockets,” Afenifere noted.

On the rate of unemployment in the country, Afenifere appealed that federal capital projects, including road projects, should be geared towards creating employment.

It criticised a situation whereby politicians prefer to engage foreign contractors in the execution of projects, noting that such gestures have no impact on employment in the country.

“If Mr. President will allow us, we will submit at a later date, a proposal for massive employment creation using the existing artisans throughout the country to institute a National Apprenticeship Programme will take millions if youths off the streets,” the pan-Yoruba group said.

Meanwhile, Afenifere commended the president for the reconstruction of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos and the rehabilitation of parts of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The group called on the president to also look into the state of all the federal highways in the south-west region, including the Ibadan-Ife, Akure-Ado Ekiti and Osogbo-Ibadan, among others.

EFCC Talks Tough As Ododo Whisks Bello Away, Insists On Ex-Gov’s Arraignment Today

…Court Can’t Prevent EFCC From Prosecuting Bello — Falana

The embattled former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has been whisked away from his Abuja residence by his successor, Governor Usman Ododo, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

A top source in the EFCC, who preferred not to be named, confirmed this to Channels Television.

This is coming after operatives of the anti-graft agency had laid siege to the Wuse Zone 4 residence of the former Kogi governor for most part of Wednesday.

The EFCC had cordoned off the road and entrance to Bello’s residence in an attempt to have him arrested and arraigned for corruption charges on Thursday.

As the EFCC operatives surrounded the ex-governor’s residence, his successor Ododo arrived amid cheers from the supporters of Bello who had gathered to support their embattled principal.

The Kogi State governor after a while left the premises of his predecessor, with the anti-graft agency confirming that he took Bello along with him.

This development now puts in doubt the ex-governor’s expected arraignment on a 19-count charge before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court Abuja on Thursday.

Meanwhile, there was conflicting court order over the arrest of the Kogi former governor on Wednesday.

One of the rulings, which came from a Kogi State High Court sitting in Lokoja, restrained the EFCC from arresting, detaining or prosecuting Bello.

Justice I.A Jamil, who gave the order in a two-hour ruling on Wednesday, said that infringing on the fundamental human rights of the former Kogi is null and void except as authorised by the Court.

“By this order, the EFCC is hereby restrained from arresting, detaining and prosecuting the applicant except as authorised by the Court.

“This is a definite order following the earlier interim injunction given,” he said.

The EFCC, however, obtained permission from the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to arrest the ex-Kogi State governor in preparation to his arraignment on Thursday.

Justice Emeka Nwite granted the warrant this afternoon at the instance of the EFCC.

Bello served as the governor of the North Central state from January 27, 2016 to January 27, 2024, when he handed over to his fellow party man in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Usman Ododo.

Meanwhile, Human Rights lawyer, Mr Femi Falana SAN, on Wednesday, said no court of law can prevent the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from prosecuting the former governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello, over alleged theft of N84bn from the coffers of the state.

Falana’s reaction came on the heels of the declaration by the former governor that the EFCC had disobeyed a court order by attempting to arrest him to answer the charge of the alleged N84bn theft.

Falana, in a statement he signed, said the move by the EFCC was tenable as Bello had lost his immunity from arrest and prosecution.

“As a former governor, Mr. Yahaya Bello has lost his immunity from arrest and prosecution. No court can confer a life immunity on a former governor in Nigeria,” Falana asserted.

Speaking further, the human rights lawyer said the Supreme Court had pointed out that the order of a High Court to the effect that a criminal suspect should not be arrested cannot bar a court of coordinate jurisdiction from trying him.

Citing the case of Orji Kalu versus the Federal Republic of Nigeria (2016) 39 WRN 53, where the Appellant challenged the EFCC for charging him before the Federal High Court despite the order of the High Court of Abia State restraining the anti-graft agency from violating his fundamental right to personal liberty.

“In dismissing the appeal, the Supreme Court said that the “gagging order” should not be allowed to stand and that “The suit of the Appellant at Abia State High Court and the general and ambiguous order made therein were clearly intended to ‘muzzle’ or prevent the 1st Respondent from discharging its statutory function,” Falana recalled.

Speaking further, Falana advised that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, withdraw police officers attached to Bello’s residence.

“Because of the foregoing, the police officers who prevented the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission from arresting the suspect have committed a grave criminal offence. The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun should withdraw the said police officers from the private residence of Mr. Bello without any delay and have them charged for obstruction of justice,” he said.

UCL: Real Madrid Oust Man City On Penalties, Zoom Into Semi Finals

Manchester City’s dreams of retaining the Champions League were shattered after a dramatic penalty shoot-out loss to Real Madrid.

Bernardo Silva and Mateo Kovacic both missed from the spot as City were beaten 4-3 on penalties after their pulsating quarter-final tie ended 4-4 on aggregate.

Rodrygo had given Real an early lead in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium but City otherwise dominated and, after creating a host of chances, finally made it 1-1 on the night through Kevin De Bruyne in the 76th minute.

De Bruyne spurned a good chance to win the tie in normal time and Erling Haaland had earlier hit the crossbar but it was the competition’s record 14-time winners who ultimately prevailed.
