Pennant frustrated over Liverpool’s lack of defensive signings
Former Reds midfielder Jermaine Pennant has revealed how frustrated he is with Liverpool’s lack of business.
The Premier League champions splashed out £450m on transfers in the summer on the likes of Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz.
However, despite splashing the cash, Liverpool’s defence is weak as summer signing Milos Kerkez has failed to live up to expectations whilst Giovanni Leoni has torn his ACL.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Pennant revealed how disappointed he is to see the Reds sit back and not splash the cash on their defence, who have leaked 28 goals in the Premier League this season.
“We spent quite a lot in the summer, but some sort of cover, maybe someone who can even just sit on the bench.
“We are injury prone at the moment and down to bare bones and loads of games coming. We are still in loads of competitions and have got to try and maintain to keep in the top 4 for Champions League football.
“It’s a little bit disappointing and as the hierarchy, the sporting director and the board should be looking at this thing if we don’t get anyone in we are taking a gamble.
“If we get one more injury, that could really destroy our season in every way, shape and form. It’s disappointing to hear that we are not looking at getting anyone. I don’t know how they can sit there and go ‘yeah everything is fine, it’s alright’.”
Liverpool are also set to miss out on Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi who will join Manchester City over the next week.
The Champions had agreed a deal believed to be worth an initial £35M for Guehi on deadline day in September, only for Palace to pull the plug at the last minute.
They are set to miss out once more as they refuse to bid for the defender, who will leave for just £20M.

Alisson: Liverpool made too many changes this season
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson admits they’ve let themselves down this season.
The Premier League title holders sit in sixth place on the table and are in danger of missing Champions League qualification for next season.
Speaking to ESPN, Alisson said: “Our season is far, far below (what it should be). I think we realise that, we feel that, we are aware of that. For the quality of the team, for the size of Liverpool.
“But all the factors you mentioned about change, if you had only had one, it would have been very difficult. Because if you look at it, the team that won the Premier League last year and the starting eleven (now) are very different teams, even in terms of characteristics.”
The tragic death of Diogo Jota has also been a factor.
Alisson also said, “We are experiencing emotional problems that go beyond human. Humans cannot handle it. Everyone handles it in their own way. We lost a teammate, we lost a friend and we have injury problems.
“Whatever you can say, problems that can arise in football, most of what can happen in terms of challenges, we have faced this season. But we never use that as an excuse. We try to do our best.”

Tottenham Hire Igor Tudor As Interim Manager
Tottenham confirmed the appointment of Igor Tudor as their interim manager until the end of the season on Saturday.
Former Juventus boss Tudor replaces Thomas Frank, who was sacked on Wednesday, with Tottenham languishing only five points above the Premier League relegation zone.
The Croatian and Tottenham hierarchy reached a verbal agreement on Friday, and the deal has now been rubber-stamped.
“It is an honour to join this club at an important moment,” Tudor said.
“I understand the responsibility I have been handed, and my focus is clear. To bring greater consistency to our performances and compete with conviction in every match.
“There is a strong quality in this playing squad, and my job is to organise it, energise it and improve our results quickly.”
At Juventus, Tudor inherited a team that sat outside the Champions League places late in the 2024-25 campaign, but he guided them to a fourth-place finish after losing just one of his first 11 games in charge.
He was unable to replicate that form this season and paid the price.
The 47-year-old was dismissed in October after an eight-match winless run left the Italian club struggling in eighth place in Serie A.
Tudor has also had spells in charge of Lazio, Marseille, Verona, Hajduk Split, Galatasaray, and Udinese.
The former Croatia defender will be tasked with cleaning up the mess left by Frank, who was sacked one day after a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle on Tuesday.
Frank, hired from Brentford last year after Ange Postecoglou’s sacking, was removed after a miserable run of two wins in 17 league games.
Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange expects Tudor to prove a unifying force at a club in turmoil during Frank’s dismal seven-month reign.
As well as battling to avoid relegation for the first time since 1976-77, the north London club have reached the last 16 of the Champions League in their sole glimmer of hope this season.
“Igor brings clarity, intensity and experience of stepping into challenging moments and producing impact,” said Lange.
“Our objective is straightforward -– to stabilise performances, maximise the quality within the squad and compete strongly in the Premier League and Champions League.”
Tottenham’s players have been given time off until Monday due to the club being without a weekend match after their FA Cup exit in January.
Opting for a temporary boss follows the template used by Manchester United, who hired Michael Carrick until the end of the season after dismissing Ruben Amorim.
Tottenham had also been linked with former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic and ex-RB Leipzig boss Marco Rose prior to reports of their agreement with Tudor.
Candidates for the permanent Tottenham job are likely to include their former manager, Mauricio Pochettino after his United States commitments at the World Cup in June and July.
Lange and Tottenham chief executive Vinai Venkatesham can expect criticism if Tudor doesn’t improve results, given his lack of Premier League experience and reputation for producing the same kind of cautious performances that angered fans in Frank’s tenure.
Tottenham’s next match is the north London derby at home to Premier League leaders Arsenal on February 22.

Sweden coach Potter offers Liverpool fans Isak hope
Sweden coach Graham Potter says there’s hope of Liverpool striker Alexander Isak being fit next month.
Isak is recovering from a leg fracture, with reports claiming he won’t be seen again this season.
But Potter insists the striker could make their World Cup playoff against Ukraine on March 26.
He told Fotboll Direkt: “I hope they (Isak and Dejan Kulusevski, Tottenham) can play, but these are big injuries. It’s tough to come back from injuries like that by March, but there’s a chance.
“Yes, I have spoken to both of them. They are on their way back and are optimistic.
“They are working very hard at home in the club team in an attempt to play with us in March.”
