Okafor’s Brace Ends Leeds’ 45-Year Wait For Win At Man Utd

Published

on

Noah Okafor fired Leeds to a long-awaited 2-1 win over 10-man Manchester United at Old Trafford as the Premier League strugglers boosted their bid to avoid relegation on Monday.

Okafor punished United’s sloppy defending with a brace in the first-half before Lisandro Martinez was sent off after pulling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s hair after the interval.

Casemiro got one back for United, but Leeds held on for their first win against United since a shock 2010 FA Cup success when they were in the third tier.

The Yorkshire club were able to celebrate their first top-flight win against United since 2002 and their first league victory at Old Trafford in 45 years.

A first win in seven league matches lifted Daniel Farke’s side six points clear of the relegation zone, with six games left to preserve their top-flight status after last season’s promotion.

As well as battling for survival, Leeds are through to the FA Cup semi-finals, where they face Chelsea at Wembley on April 26.

While Manchester City and Liverpool are United’s main rivals, their fans’ enmity with Leeds supporters goes back decades, featuring numerous clashes between hooligan gangs.

That made the defeat a bitter pill to swallow for United fans, who booed Michael Carrick’s side at full-time.

It was only Carrick’s second defeat in 11 games since he replaced the sacked Ruben Amorim as interim boss in January.

United remain in third place, seven points ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea in the race to qualify for the Champions League via a top-five finish.

The last time United played Leeds, Carrick was on holiday with former Old Trafford team-mate Wayne Rooney and their respective families in Barbados.

Carrick has revitalised United since taking charge, but one win from their last four games is a step back.

United’s trip to Chelsea on Saturday offers another chance to take a step towards returning to Europe’s elite club competition for the first time since 2023-24.

Leeds had failed to score in their previous four league games, but they blew United away with a blistering start.

When Jayden Bogle whipped a fifth-minute cross towards Dominic Calvert-Lewin, United defender Leny Yoro was unable to clear and Okafor pounced with a clinical finish from 10 yards.

With Harry Maguire suspended, United were shambolic at the back in the first-half and Okafor netted again after more defensive miscues in the 29th minute.

United made a hash of clearing twice in quick succession and the ball was eventually worked to Okafor, whose strike took a hefty deflection off Yoro as it flashed past Senne Lammens.

Carrick’s men were back in action for the first time in 24 days and they looked rusty after the enforced break.

Lisandro Martinez was forced to make a last-ditch tackle on the goal-line to stop Ao Tanka scoring a third for Leeds after the Japan midfielder danced around Lammens.

Benjamin Sesko’s effort was cleared off the line soon after the interval and United’s nightmare evening continued when Martinez saw red in the 56th minute.

Martinez needlessly tugged Calvert-Lewin’s long hair and referee Paul Tierney sent him off after consulting the pitch-side monitor.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, United reduced the deficit in the 69th minute when Casemiro met Bruno Fernandes’ cross with a thumping header past Karl Darlow from six yards.

It was Fernandes’ 17th league assist this season, closing the gap on the single-season record of 20 held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

Calvert-Lewin squandered a golden opportunity to wrap up the points, heading straight at Lammens from close-range.

Darlow made a superb save from Sesko’s header before Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte had efforts cleared off the line as Leeds held firm in a frantic finale.

Jadon Sancho clashes with Man Utd supporters after Villa reach final

Published

on

Jadon Sancho argued with Manchester United fans after Aston Villa reached the Europa League final this week.

Villa ran riot on Thursday night, beating Nottingham Forest 4-0 to claim a 4-1 aggregate victory and book their place in the Europa League final against Freiburg.

The Premier League side are into a first European final for 44 years whilst Sancho will play his third in as many seasons after finals with Chelsea and Borrusia Dortmund in the past few years.

However, after the game, fans ripped into Sancho who they believe simply does not contribute enough to the clubs he has helped reach finals in recent years.

“Let’s have a quick look at @Sanchooo10’s input in getting to those finals,” one United fans posted.

To which Sancho replied: “Yeah, make sure you have a good look!”

Another United fan jumped in: “Made a European final playing absolutely no part (he come on for 4 minutes tonight) and he’s suddenly acting as if he’s (Kylian) Mbappe. Shows his weak & poor mentality, m***.”

Sancho did not bite as he responded: “Have a good night, bro!”

When told he “peaked at 21” and was called a “nothing footballer” who couldn’t succeed at United by a user named ‘Christiano’. Sancho mocked the X user by asking: “Just wondering, is your name actually Christiano?”

The England star’s final post came at 12.28am as he posted: “Jokes aside Love n Hate today is for @AVFCOfficial goodnight Villans,” Sancho wrote. “See you in Istanbul!”

Sancho got to the Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund in 2024, the Conference League final with Chelsea in 2025 and has now reached the Europa League final with Villa in 2026.

He will be seeking to make it 2 successful finals out of 3 with Villa who could make history later this month in Istanbul.

Gerrard Tips Kane To Win 2026 Ballon d’Or

Published

on

Former Liverpool captain, Steven Gerrard, has tipped Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or.

Gerrard believes the England captain deserves the top individual award.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Gerrard also explained how the former Tottenham Hotspur star can get his hands on the Ballon d’Or.

“More goals, more top performances. I think if he [Kane] can add another medal come the end of the season, I think that would be huge. I think that probably puts one hand on it [Ballon d’Or] for him,” the former Aston Villa manager said of Kane regarding the 2026 Ballon d’Or.

“Then, if he was to go away with England and have a successful tournament in terms of goals and where England gets to in the competition, I think he would strengthen his case.

“And I’d love nothing better than to see him be successful from now until the end of the season, and get the individual award that he will crave.
“In the back of his mind, he will want that, and he deserves it.”

Kane is one of the favourites for this year’s Ballon d’Or, alongside the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Declan Rice, Michael Olise, Lamine Yamal, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, among others.

Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez has reportedly reached an agreement with club Al Hilal over his departure this summer.

The 26-year-old only left Liverpool for Saudi Arabia in a deal said to be worth £46 million last summer but is already eyeing an exit.

Nunez has struggled in Saudi, scoring just nine goals and providing five assists in his 24 games across all competitions.

Al Hilal recently made the decision to axe Nunez from their Saudi Pro League squad following the arrival of Karim Benzema.

According to Uruguayan outlet El Observador, Nunez and his club have now reached an agreement that would allow him to leave this summer.

Juventus, AC Milan and even Chelsea have all previously been linked with a move for the striker, with a return to Europe likely.
