Natasha condemns Niger market attack, calls for swift action

Published

Kogi Central senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has condemned the recent terrorist attack at Kasuwan Daji Market in Niger State, which reportedly left over 42 people dead including women and saw several others abducted.

The attack which occurred January 3, 2026, in the Demo community of Borgu Local Government Area, when gunmen opened fire on traders and residents, set parts of the market ablaze, and fled with an unspecified number of abductees.

In a statement released in Abuja on Monday, the senator described the incident as “heartbreaking, senseless and a tragic reminder of the worsening insecurity confronting many Nigerian communities.”

“My heart is heavy as I mourn the innocent men and women who were brutally murdered at Kasuwan Daji Market,” Akpoti-Uduaghan said.

“These were ordinary Nigerians going about their lawful activities, only to be cut down by evil forces that have no regard for human life.”

She extended her deepest sympathies to the families of the victims, praying for strength and comfort in the face of their loss.

“I sympathise profoundly with the families who have suffered this cruel loss. No words can truly heal such pain, but I pray that God grants them the fortitude to bear these irreparable losses,” she added.

The senator also highlighted the destructive impact of the attack on the community, pointing out that abductions and the burning of the market devastate livelihoods and destabilise local economies.

“The burning of the market and the kidnapping of innocent citizens deepen the trauma on these communities. This cycle of violence must not be allowed to continue unchecked,” she stated.

Urging immediate action, Akpoti-Uduaghan called on the Federal Government and security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Our people deserve protection, and criminals terrorising our communities must be confronted with the full weight of the law,” she said.

She further stressed the importance of a proactive, intelligence-led security strategy for rural and vulnerable areas, warning against normalising such tragedies.

Due to the rising insecurity across Nigeria, the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries (MFM) has directed all its branches to end church programmes by 8pm.

Vigils and overnight meetings have also been suspended until further notice.

The directive was contained in an internal memo dated June 5, 2026, and signed by the Director of Administration at the church’s international headquarters in Lagos, Temitope A. Olawale.

The church said the decision was taken in the interest of the safety and well-being of its members amid prevailing security challenges in the country.

According to the memo, all services, meetings and other church activities must henceforth end not later than 8:00 pm.

It also stated that vigils and overnight prayer programmes were suspended until further notice.

Uzodinma begs APC primary election losers to accept results, work for party

Published

on

Following some complaints and disharmony arising from the just concluded primaries of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Imo State chapter, Governor Hope Uzodinma has appealed to aggrieved aspirants who lost out during the exercise to accept the outcome of the primaries and see it as a sacrifice they offered for the stability of the party.

He urged them and other party faithful to concentrate on how to ensure the APC has a successful outing in the 2027 elections.

The Governor made the appeal during a post-primary stakeholders meeting convened by the party leadership aimed at assuaging frayed nerves following the aftermath of the primaries.

Addressing party leaders, candidates and former aspirants, Uzodinma congratulated the party on the just-concluded exercise, which he described as a success, while urging members to put the contests behind them in the interest of party unity.

He stressed that while every election produces winners and losers, members must remain committed to the collective interest of the party and the development of the State.

“There is no contest without winners and losers. What is important is how we conduct ourselves after the contest. We must remain united because the interest of the State and our party is bigger than any individual ambition,” the governor said.

Uzodinma called on party faithful to intensify grassroots mobilisation and voter registration efforts ahead of 2027, expressing confidence that APC would record overwhelming victories in the State.

Earlier in his speech, the State Chairman of the party, Austin Onyedebelu, commended members for their peaceful conduct during the primaries, describing the exercise as evidence of the political maturity of party members.

He congratulated successful candidates and urged those who did not secure tickets to remain loyal to the APC, noting that politics is a journey and future opportunities remain open to committed party members.

Onyedebelu used the occasion to call on those who contested the primaries to collapse their structures into the party mainstream ahead of the general elections.

The meeting ended with a unanimous pledge by stakeholders, candidates and former aspirants to remain united and mobilise support for APC candidates at all levels, including President Tinubu, in the 2027 general elections

Liverpool in ‘strongest position’ to sign Yan Diomande despite PSG interest

Published

on

Liverpool are gunning to sign RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, arguably one of the most promising talents in world football.

Mohamed Salah’s imminent departure will leave a huge void in the right channel after destroying Premier League defences during his nine years at Anfield.

But instead of trying to find a like-for-like replacement, the Reds feel Diomande’s versatility – capable of playing on the right or left flank – will be a massive asset for them.

Their biggest problem in negotiations for the 19-year-old, though, is Leipzig’s unwillingness to sell and PSG’s interest in his signature.

Diomande recently admitted that PSG is a team he “admires” as a football fan, and his father supports them, arguably dealing Liverpool a blow in their pursuit of the teenage sensation.

But David Ornstein’s latest update suggests that the Champions League winners aren’t guaranteed to land him, as he feels the Merseyside giants are in the “strongest position” to negotiate a move with the player.

Leipzig reportedly want a whopping £104 million for the Ivorian international after watching him dazzle on the domestic and European stage. He produced an eye-watering 23 goal involvements in 36 appearances and will only get even better.
