Long Days, Cold Nights Ahead For Baba Ijesha
The ongoing sexual assault saga surrounding popular Yoruba movie actor, Nollywood actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka popularly known as Baba Ijesha may well be pass for a movie script.
Baba Ijesha was arrested by the Police in Lagos State for allegedly defiling a minor – a 14-year-old girl. He was reported to have confessed to the crime, as he was also caught on CCTV camera sexually handling the victim in the house of popular comedian, Princess Adekoya.
Since the story of Baba Ijesha’s alleged Sexual assault mess came to the fore in April, many, including his fans and colleagues doubted the reports and sought to see the CCTV footage which implicated him.
The issue became a major topic in the media after the Lagos State Police stated that Baba Ijesha, who was arrested for defiling a minor will be granted bail. They said that the allegation against Baba Ijesha was on a sexual and indecent assault which is bailable, not defilement.
However, the matter became clearer to a lot of people after Princess made a video recently, explaining how the whole issue started.
According to her, after she lost her marriage and had challenges that made her childless, some people who were so passionate about her entrusted the victim and five other children to her care, she also explained how Baba Ijesha defiled the minor, who started behaving strangely afterward.
While Baba Ijesha deserves to be condemned for his sexual malfeasance, it is important to take out sentiments and approach the situation as it is.
Punch Newspapers has published the CCTV footage of the incident on their social media handle, and from what is seen, many observers believe it is a clear case of sexual assault. Stiffer measures should have been taken against the popular Yoruba actor to serve as a deterrent for others. Some months or even a year in prison should have been enough rather than a cheap bail, particularly for an offence that involved a minor.
The point however is that the law doesn’t give prejudice to who is right or wrong. It is who can build and defend a case that emerges victorious. This is the point the law becomes insufficient.
However, the embattled Yoruba actor is expected to face a five-count charge following an alleged rape and sexual assault on a minor.
The Attorney-General of Lagos and Commissioner of Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
Onigbanjo said following the advice given on the case by the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), the suspect will be tried under five provisions of the criminal law of Lagos State.
The charges and implications listed in the statement are
1) Section 135, Indecent Treatment of a child- punishable by 7 years imprisonment,
(2)Section 137- Defilement of a Child-, punishable by life imprisonment,
(3) Section 261. Sexual Assault by Penetration- punishable by life imprisonment,
(4) Section 262- Attempted Sexual Assault by Penetration, punishable by 14 years imprisonment and
(5) Section 263, Sexual Assault-punishable by 3 years imprisonment.
On Wednesday (today), his close pal, actor Yomi Fabiyi on Wednesday led a protest to demand the release of Baba Ijesha who was accused of molesting a minor.
Fabiyi and some Nigerians held the protest at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba. He said it is a violation of human rights for the police to continue to detain Baba Ijesha without a court trial.
Reacting to Fabiyi’s call for Baba Ijesha’s bail after the protest, another actress, Iyabo Ojo, has vowed that she would not back down in the alleged case of sexual assault involving her colleague, Baba Ijesha, Princess’ foster daughter.
She mentioned that she once thought the government was the problem of Nigeria but she has come to realize that “we are our own problem.”
While it is important that objectivity guides the judgment on this controversial case, one must understand that the law is frail. Sometimes, it grants justice to the deserving. Other times, it is the opposite. Most rape cases regrettably are usually in the latter category.
But the big question on the lips of almost every Nigerian is if Baba Ijesha will escape the big hammer or face the reality of 14 years of his already shattered life behind bars. Only time will tell.

“God’s Plans Cannot Be Derailed By Human Opinions” — Mercy Johnson
Nigerian actress and film director Mercy Johnson-Okojie has shared a message on faith and God’s grace. In a lengthy Instagram post, she said God does not judge people the way humans do.
The actress said God can restore what others reject and redeem what others condemn. She added that when one door closes, God can create new opportunities where none seem possible.
Johnson stressed that God’s mercy and blessings are not determined by public opinion. She described Him as a God of second chances, fresh beginnings and unexpected favour.
She also encouraged her followers to remain faithful and grateful. According to her, true peace comes from trusting God rather than seeking approval from others. She added that people’s opinions cannot stop God’s purpose, and His plans will always prevail.
She wrote: “God is not a man. He does not judge as men judge, nor does he bow to the opinions, mockery, or decisions of people. What men reject, God can restore. What men condemn, God can redeem. When others close doors, God can open windows no one knew existed. His mercy is not limited by human understanding, and His blessings are not controlled by human approval.
“He is the God of second chances, fresh starts, and unexpected favour. He lifts whom He chooses, blesses whom He wills, and writes stories that leave even doubters speechless.
“One of the greatest forms of peace is arriving at a place where you no longer crave to be understood, admired, pitied, or even liked by everyone.
“True peace comes when your confidence is rooted in God, not in people’s opinions. When you stop seeking validation from the world, you begin to experience the freedom that comes from knowing whose own you are.
“Let people talk. Let them misunderstand. Let them mock if they choose. Human conversations never cancel God’s plans. His purpose for your life does not require public approval. Stay faithful. Stay grateful. Stay at peace.
“The same God who brought you through yesterday is still writing your story today, and His final word will always be greater than the opinions of men”.
