Let’s Make Lagos Stand Like A Country, Obasa Tells Lawmakers At Plenary

The Speaker, Lagos House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has admonished the lawmakers to work towards making the state to stand as a country, such that it will not have to wait for subventions from the Federation Account.
Obasa spoke on Thursday at a plenary as lawmakers who resumed from the recess they had taken for the general elections thanked God and Lagosians for their reelection for the 9th Assembly
The lawmakers also took turns to hail the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, party stakeholders and constituents for their reelection.
The successful lawmakers commended Obasa for “shouldering” their matters as his, and giving them necessary support.
Mr. Tunde Braimoh, representing Kosofe Constituency II in the House, commended Tinubu, Obasa, all stakeholders and his constituents for their support.
Braimoh, who was reelected for the second term, said that the trust reposed in him by the people would not be regretted.
According to him, the annual stakeholders meeting of the House, through which it interfaces with the people, should be held more frequently to feel the pulse of the people, as such fora aided their reelection.
Also, Mr. Bisi Yusuff, representing Alimosho Constituency I in the House, commended former Osun governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, residents, party stakeholders and his family for staying by him to ensure his third term.
Mr. Abiodun Tobun, representing Epe Constituency I at the Assembly, who also commended people of Epe for supporting him for his third term, and promised to serve the people more.
Mr. Jude Idimogu also commended Tinubu, Obasa and other APC leaders in his constituency, Oshodi-Isolo I, for giving him the opportunity to serve for a second term.
Other lawmakers who spoke at the plenary include: Messrs Yinka Ogundimu (Agege I), Olusola Sokunle (Oshodi-Isolo I) and Setonji David (Badagry II)
Others are: Messrs Nurudeen Solaja-Saka (Ikorodu II), Moshood Oshun (Lagos Mainland II), Noheem Adams (Eti-Osa I), Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa II), Ibrahim Layode (Badagry I), Fatai Mojeed (Ibeju-Lekki I), among others.
Some of the lawmakers were reelected for second term, third term and fourth term, while only Obasa was reelected for the fifth term in the March 9 governorship and House of Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, some other lawmakers like Mrs. Adefunmilayo Tejuosho (Mushin I) and Mr. Dipo Olorunrinu (Amuwo-Odofin I) who would not be returning to the House for the 9th assembly also commended the people for the opportunity to serve.
In his response, Obasa commended his colleagues for their support and loyalty, assuring that Lagos had the capacity to soar higher than where it was currently operating.
The Speaker urged the lawmakers to reciprocate the love and support received from the people during the elections and ensure they do more for them in the 9th assembly.
“I want to thank all the members for praising me. You stood by us, so we too should stand by you,” he said.
Obasa urged the reelected lawmakers to appreciate their constituents with their works.
“Let us serve the people effectively so that the people would see that we are working.
“Let us ensure that we push Lagos to stand like a country. States such as California and Atlanta in the United States of America could stand on their own.
“We should do something so that Lagos can go forward beyond its level. Let us move Lagos forward and work hard so that we do not wait for allocations from Abuja before we can do what we want to do.
“We have been doing it and we must do more. We should think on what we can do as lawmakers to take Lagos higher.
“I believe that Lagos can go beyond what we are. We should see it that the work is to be done collectively,” he said.
Obasa said that the House could do a lot by working with the incoming governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
He urged chairmen of all the House standing committees to finish their legislative work before the end of the 8th Assembly.
Obasa thanked outgoing Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his efforts and for the feat recorded by the APC in the last elections.
The House adjourned its plenary session till April 8.

Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, buried in Ijebu-Ode

The revered monarch was buried at 6:00 p.m. on Monday in a mausoleum he personally constructed within his compound.
Oba Adetona, who died on Sunday at the age of 91, was one of Nigeria’s most respected traditional rulers and the longest-reigning Awujale in history, having ascended the throne on April 2, 1960.
His reign spanned an extraordinary 65 years, marked by visionary leadership, cultural revival, and strong advocacy for good governance and the rule of law.
The late monarch’s burial followed Islamic rites and was witnessed by close family members and palace officials, in line with his personal wishes for a modest and private final journey.
Oba Adetona was not only revered within Ijebuland but also held in high esteem across Nigeria and beyond. His legacy includes the modernization of the Ijebu traditional institution and his philanthropic contributions to education and public service, including the establishment of the Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University.
In a remarkable twist of fate, Oba Adetona died on the same day as his close friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London after a prolonged illness. The two elder statesmen shared a deep bond, united by their influence and dedication to national service.
As tributes continue to pour in from traditional rulers, political leaders, and citizens across Nigeria, the people of Ijebuland are mourning the loss of a father figure and cultural icon whose legacy will endure for generations.
Funeral activities and plans for a broader celebration of life are expected to be announced by the palace in the coming days.

Fashola mourns Buhari, says he lived a life of “discipline without drama”

In a tribute released on Sunday, Fashola said he was mourning with “a deeply heavy heart and profound sense of personal loss.”
“I join millions of Nigerians and friends around the world to mourn the passing of our former President, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,” he wrote.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to his beloved wife, Hajiya Aisha Buhari, his children, and his entire extended family.”
Fashola, a former governor of Lagos, also extended his condolences to the government and people of Katsina State, especially the Daura Emirate, where the late president was born and later retired after leaving office.
Reflecting on Buhari’s public service, Fashola described him as a rare figure whose contributions spanned both military and democratic eras.
“From the battlefield to the ballot box, he stood as a sentinel of duty… guided always by a belief in discipline, integrity, and nationhood,” he said.
According to Fashola, Buhari’s personal values, including punctuality, order, and accountability, were often overlooked by public commentary but critical to his leadership style.
“He was perhaps the most punctual public servant I ever encountered — never late to cabinet meetings, always respecting the time of others. It may seem a small thing, but in governance, it is everything. It sets a tone,” he added.
He recalled Buhari’s controversial but value-driven “War Against Indiscipline” campaign, which he said was often misunderstood.
“It was rooted in a desire to rebuild a citizenry of order, courtesy, and civic responsibility,” he said
