Joe Biden Diagnosed With Prostate Cancer

Published

on

Former US president Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones, and is reviewing treatment options, a statement from his office said Sunday.

On Friday, the 82-year-old Democrat was diagnosed with the cancer after he experienced increasing urinary symptoms and was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule, the statement said.

“While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which allows for effective management. The President and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians,” it continued.

Cancer cells are commonly found in the prostates of men of Biden’s age, though in most cases they grow slowly. Hormone therapy is a common treatment that can shrink tumors and slow cancer growth, but is not a cure.

According to the statement, Biden’s cancer was found to have “a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5).”

Prostate cancer that looks “very abnormal” is assigned the highest rating, Grade 5, according to the American Cancer Society. The Gleason Score often indicates the sum of the grades from the two areas in the prostate that make up most of the cancer, but can also be calculated other ways.

Biden left office in January this year as the oldest serving US president in history, and was dogged by questions over his health and age for much of his presidency.

For years he had faced questions, including from Democratic voters, over whether he was too old — lacking in mental acuity or physical endurance — for a job as trying as the presidency.

His response to doubters was a brisk: “Watch me.”

But in July last year he was forced to drop his reelection bid after a disastrous debate against Republican Donald Trump in which fears about his decline and cognitive abilities came surging to the fore.

His vice president, Kamala Harris, eventually lost to Trump.

Biden maintains that he could have won the election, but questions have long swirled over the responses of staff and key Democrats to evident signs of his decline.

They have flared with the release, set for this Tuesday, of “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Its Cover-Up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again” by CNN journalist Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson of Axios.

Last week a newly published recording of Biden speaking hesitantly and struggling to remember key events and dates fueled renewed debate over his mental capabilities while still in office.

Biden’s life has been marked by personal tragedy. In 1972 his wife and baby daughter were killed in a car crash, days after he had been elected as a US senator at the age of 29.

Biden underwent surgery twice in 1988 for brain aneurysms. In 2023 he had a skin lesion — a basal cell carcinoma — removed from his chest. He had previously had non-melanoma skin cancers removed.

Biden’s son Beau Biden died of brain cancer in 2015.

Gov Sani Demands Immediate Arrest Of Killers Of Kaduna Indigenes In Plateau

Published

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has condemned the killing of some indigenes of the state by a suspected mob in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The victims were said to be travelling from Zaria in Kaduna State for a wedding in Quan Pan Local Government Area of Plateau State when they were intercepted by the mob at Mangun district.

The travelers were killed instantly, while several others sustained various degrees of injuries during the attack.

Expressing shock and sadness over such an act of savagery, Governor Sani, in a statement, called on security agencies to immediately arrest and prosecute those behind the attack.

He vowed that the Kaduna State Government would not leave a stone unturned until the criminals were hunted down and brought to justice.

The governor said, “We must put a stop to the nefarious activities of non-state actors. There is no justification for anybody to attack any citizen of Nigeria in any part of the country. This madness must stop. Enough is enough”.

Governor Sani, therefore, appealed to his Plateau State counterpart, Caleb Mutfwang, to use the unfortunate incident to make a bold statement by taking full charge of the situation and directing the operations of security agencies until the murderers are brought to justice.

The governor promised to personally follow up on the progress made in the investigations and field operations in search of the criminals to send a clear signal that impunity will no longer be tolerated.

He, however, called on the citizens of Kaduna State to remain calm, stating that all hands are on deck to ensure that the victims get justice.

Sani also consoled the families of the victims over the loss of their loved ones.

He said, “We have made remarkable progress in peacebuilding and conflict transformation in Kaduna State. The Kaduna Peace Model is a pointer to the fact that with political will, commitment, and sincerity of purpose, a toxic environment can be turned into an ‘oasis of peace’.

“The situation in Plateau State is not irredeemable. The bloodshed must stop. Our deepest condolences to the families of our citizens who lost their precious lives in Mangu Local Government. I am in touch with the families of the victims. We shall do all in our power to lessen their pains. We shall also ensure that the injured victims receive adequate medical attention. May the gentle souls of our departed citizens rest in perfect peace”.

Benue Killings: Akume Begins Peace Talks With Traditional Rulers

Published

on

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has commenced consultations with traditional leaders in Benue as part of efforts to implement President Bola Tinubu’s directive for the establishment of a Peace Committee to tackle insecurity in the state.

In a statement issued on Saturday by Terrence Kuanum, Special Adviser on Public Affairs to the SGF, Akume visited the Tor Tiv James Ortese Ayatse, and the Och’Idoma, John Elaigwu Odogbo, at their palaces in Makurdi and Otukpo, respectively.

The consultations, aimed at fine-tuning modalities for the speedy implementation of the president’s directive, which followed his condolence and solidarity visit to the state on Wednesday in the wake of a deadly attack in Yelewata that reportedly claimed over 200 lives.

Senator Akume informed both traditional rulers of their inclusion on the Peace Committee as mandated by President Tinubu.

He emphasised the need for swift consensus-building toward an inclusive and effective committee capable of restoring peace and stability to the troubled region.

According to him, the President is gravely concerned about the impact of continued violence on Benue’s status as Nigeria’s agricultural powerhouse and a critical driver of national food security.

The SGF expressed gratitude to the royal fathers for their roles in warmly receiving the president during his recent visit and urged them to ensure the traditional institution remains active in securing local communities.

Both the Tor Tiv and the Och’Idoma commended the Federal Government’s intervention and pledged their full commitment to the peace-building process. The SGF was accompanied on the visits by several prominent Benue figures.
