It’s Unfair To Judge Us For Result Upload Glitch – INEC

Published

on

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Tuesday, said the glitch experienced in the upload of the February 25 presidential election in the country should not write off the entire polls held nationwide.

INEC National Commissioner, Festus Okoye stated this in response to the final report on the 2023 general elections submitted by the European Union Election Observation Mission on Monday.

He urged Nigerians not to judge the electoral empire as a result of the challenge the commission experienced in the upload of the presidential election.

“It is not fair to judge the entire performance of the commission on the basis of a glitch in the result upload for the presidential election,” he said.

According to Okoye, the law has empowered political parties to know what goes on at the polling units.

“Almost all the political parties nominated and got accredited at least over 170,000 polling agents. What that means is that they had primary evidence of the results from the polling units.

“It is those results from the polling units, together with the BVAS as a machine itself that goes to the collation centre. So, it is not true for a political party to rely only on result upload in order to get the evidence with which it wants to prosecute its case in court,” he added.

The Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee explained that Nigerians commended the electoral body for the deployment of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in the general elections.

In terms of voter accreditation, Okoye maintained that nobody has faulted the functionality of the BVAS.

The BVAS machine is an electronic device distributed across the over 176,000 polling units in the country by INEC for the accreditation of voters during the 2023 general elections.

The device was also designed to promptly upload photographic copies of result sheets to the INEC Results Viewing (IReV) portal after result documentation at the polling units.

Rhe New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) in Kano State, has denied the rumour that Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso was planning to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Chairman of the party in the state, Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, said this while briefing newsmen on Friday in Kano.

Dungurawa said that Kwankwaso did not need to consult anyone before making any political decision, but emphasised that there were no plans for defection.

“We have no business with APC, and do not have any intention to defect,” Dungurawa said, dismissing the rumorus as mere mischief.

He described the speculation as baseless and motivated by desperation.

He expressed confidence that the NNPP administration in Kano State is taking shape and restoring law and order in the area.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the chairman of APC in Kano State was quoted by the media as saying that the party’s door was open to Kwankwaso and other Nigerians who wished to defect.

APC Gives Kwankwaso Condition Before Joining Party

Published

on

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that any individual seeking to join its ranks including Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), must publicly apologise for past derogatory remarks directed at President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and other senior figures in the party.

This development comes amid growing speculation over Kwankwaso’s potential defection to the ruling party, with reports suggesting President Tinubu may be considering a role for him within his administration.

Speaking on the matter on Friday, Kano State APC Chairman Abdullahi Abbas stressed that while the party remains open to new members, certain conditions must be met. Chief among them, he said, is a apology for past statements.

“We unequivocally call on all those prospective decampees who have earlier made derogatory statements against our leaders, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his deputy Senator Kashim Shettima, to offer a public apology as a sign of remorse, and respect for future relationships,” Abbas stated.

He further explained that the APC is actively engaged in efforts to receive decampees from across the political spectrum, and that the party had taken note of the rumours surrounding Kwankwaso’s potential entry.

Abbas said the APC remains Kwankwaso’s last political refuge as he has destroyed his relationships with all other political groupings in the country.

He further said ward chapters had already been instructed to begin the registration of decampees, regardless of their status.

“We have already directed our ward chapters to open registers for new decampees irrespective of their political and social status, in line with our party’s constitution.

“We advise all those desirous of joining our esteemed party to go to their respective wards and register.

“For the purpose of seeking any future party or elective position, any old or new entrants, shall be free to exercise their constitutional rights of voting or being voted for without any special preference,” he added.

Abbas also issued a warning to politicians who may view the APC as a cleansing place from corruption allegations.

“We are fully aware that some people are desperate to join the APC because they have scuttled their political goodwill and have become political lepers in the national scheme of things and are looking to the APC for political relevance.

“We are also aware that some politicians are trying to run away from accounting for their corrupt misdeeds both in government and party administration, and seeking for refuge in the APC to escape from the fangs of anti-corruption agencies like the EFCC and ICPC.

“However, joining APC as a political party is not a panacea for escaping from their past sins,” he said.

He also declared that the APC would not condone the formation of cult-like political groups under its umbrella.

“For the avoidance of doubt, let me emphasize that the APC as a political party does not and will not encourage or promote the existence of cult-like associations in the name of political activities or groupings,” Abbas stated.

APC more divided than PDP – Damagum declares as he receives defectors

Published

on

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Umar Iliya Damagum, has said that the All Progressives Congress, APC, is more divided than the PDP.

Damagum stated this while welcoming some members of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, who defected to the PDP in Nguru and Bade Local Government Areas of Yobe State.

According to him, the PDP is always a formidable opposition force, noting that the party knows how to address any internal issues if they arise.

“If there is a crisis, we know how to solve it. We are united, and our leadership is intact.

“We have one chairman and one secretariat, while the ruling party cannot even hold a NEC meeting for almost two years. You can’t compare the two,” he said.

He pointed out that the ruling party has not been able to hold a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in nearly two years.

“I don’t know why the media continues to report crises within our party,” he added.

Damagum reiterated that the PDP remains a strong and united brand, adding, “We are the party to beat.”

He maintained that the party’s doors are open to those who left in the past, as it prepares to build a credible force for the 2027 elections.
