FG Secures Release Of 100 Schoolchildren Abducted In Niger State

on

The Federal Government has reportedly secured the release of 100 schoolchildren abducted from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School, Papiri, in Agwara Local Government Area, Niger State.

Arriving around 2:00 a.m. on motorbikes, the gunmen stormed the school dormitories over a three-hour period, abducting 315 people—303 students and 12 teachers.

Security forces and community hunters were deployed to comb nearby forests for the abductees.

In the immediate aftermath, 50 pupils escaped within the first day and were reunited with their families.

However, 265 individuals—including 253 children and all 12 teachers—remained in captivity.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Abubakar Usman, the state government, while condemning the attack, said it had earlier received credible intelligence indicating elevated security threats across parts of the Niger North Senatorial District.

It said it directed the suspension of all construction activities and the temporary closure of boarding schools within the affected areas as a proactive safety measure.

The government also disclosed that the school of allegedly reopened and resumed academic activities without notifying or obtaining clearance from the government, a claim the school authority denied.

The incident attracted reactions from prominent people, including the Catholic pontif, Pope Leo XIV.

The Federal Government responded by imposing a 24-hour security cordon and launching aerial surveillance across parts of Kwara, Kebbi, and Niger States.

President Bola Tinubu cancelled planned international travel to address the crisis.

Authorities also ordered the indefinite closure of all schools in Niger State and many federal institutions in high-risk regions.

Last Monday, the National Security Adviser (NSA) to the President, Nuhu Ribadu, reassured parents and authorities of St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School, Papiri, in Agwara Local Government Area, Niger State, that the abducted pupils “are doing fine and will return soon.”

He conveyed President Tinubu’s message of hope, noting that efforts to rescue the children were progressing and security deployment in the affected area had been intensified.

“God is with them and God is with us. Evil will never win. They are going to come back. I give you that assurance,” Ribadu said during a visit to the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese and Proprietor of the school, Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, as well as parents of the abducted children at St. Michael’s Catholic Cathedral, Kontagora.

Tinubu Hails Super Eagles For Winning Bronze At AFCON

Published

on

President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Nigerian national team, Super Eagles, for Saturday’s bronze medal victory at the 2025 African Cup of Nations.

The Super Eagles overpowered Egypt, defeating the seven-time AFCON winner 4-2, in a penalty shootout after the regular time, in which the Nigerian team dominated.

The President, in a statement issued by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, commended the Super Eagles for putting behind them the disappointment of the semi-final loss to host nation, Morocco last Wednesday.
Tinubu stated that the Super Eagles players, through their victory, have once again demonstrated the determination, persistence, and can-do spirit associated with our country.

According to the President: “Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed.

“However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.

“We will all be proud of them as they receive their hard-earned bronze medal on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.

“Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold.”

Rivers APC Faults State Assembly Over Fubara Impeachment Move

Published

on

A camp in the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has faulted the Rivers State House of Assembly for proceeding with impeachment moves against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, warning that the action could destabilise both the party and the state.

In a press statement issued on Friday, and signed by its spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the APC said it had reviewed the developments at the Assembly and expressed concern over what it described as a “choreographed legislative coup d’état”.

“We have painstakingly analysed the issues leading up to the latest step taken today by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly by electing to proceed with the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor Prof Ngozi Odu.

“Regrettably, we note that honourable members who trumpeted loyalty to our party and Mr President can give themselves to the unfolding choreographed legislative coup d’état against the collective interest, growth, and development of our party in the state,” the statement said.

The party warned that Rivers State could not afford actions that threaten political stability, accusing some lawmakers, including APC members, of acting against the party’s interests.

It added that although the Assembly has constitutional powers to begin impeachment, the process remains largely subjective, as what qualifies as “gross misconduct” under Section 188 is open to political interpretation by lawmakers.

“Thus, no matter how beautifully crafted the allegations against the Governor and his Deputy are, they are still very subjective in the court of public opinion,” the statement added.

The APC cautioned that the path chosen by the Assembly could have long-term consequences for the party’s health and survival in Rivers State, describing the development as a dangerous precedent.

“This unfortunate path chosen by the legislative arm, therefore, serves as a dangerous footnote to the health and survival of the APC in Rivers State,” it said.

The party also called on the Chief Judge of Rivers State to comply with an interim injunction, which restrains him from receiving or acting on resolutions from the House of Assembly relating to the impeachment process.

“Meanwhile, we call on the Honourable Chief Judge of Rivers State to respect yesterday’s interim injunction in Suit No. OYHC/7/CS/2026 that restrained him from receiving or acting on the resolutions of the Rivers State House of Assembly,” the statement said.

It further appealed to the national leadership of the APC to urgently intervene by activating internal mechanisms available to the National Working Committee under Article 21(b)(iii) of the party’s 2022 Constitution (as amended).

“Finally, we call on the national leadership of the party to immediately activate internal mechanisms available to the National Working Committee under Article 21(b)(iii) of the 2022 Constitution (as amended) to save our dear party from an embarrassing situation,” it added.

Nwabali’s Heroics Help Nigeria Beat Egypt To Win AFCON Bronze

Published

on

Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was the hero of the day, saving two penalties as the Super Eagles beat Egypt to win bronze at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The game ended goalless after 90 minutes and headed into penalties. The Chippa United goalkeeper saved Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush’s efforts as the Super Eagles won 2-4.

Victory for the Super Eagles in Casablanca followed the disappointment of losing shoot-outs that cost them chances to compete at the 2026 World Cup and in the 2025 AFCON final.

Nigeria lost on penalties to the Democratic Republic of Congo last November in a play-off for a place in the World Cup intercontinental play-offs.

Then, three days ago, they lost another shoot-out to fail against hosts Morocco in an AFCON semi-final.

Success maintained a perfect Nigerian record in third-place AFCON matches after seven previous play-offs victories.

Before Lookman scored, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru missed the Eagles’ first kick, then Akor Adams, captain Moses Simon and Alex Iwobi scored.

Premier League pair Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush both had kicks saved by Stanley Nwabali before Ramy Rabia and Mahmoud Saber scored.

Egypt made six changes and Nigeria five to the teams that started semi-final losses to Senegal and hosts Morocco, respectively three days ago.

Captain Salah started for the Pharaohs while traditional first choices in goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy and forward Marmoush were among the substitutes.

Attackers Victor Osimhen and Lookman, both former winners of the annual African player of the year award, sat on the bench for Nigeria.

Most Moroccans in a crowd that nearly filled the 45,000-capacity Stade Mohammed V backed Nigeria. They whistled whenever Egypt gained possession and when coach Hossam Hassan was shown on the big screen.

This support for the Super Eagles was attributed to the great rivalry between Morocco and Egypt, both at national team and club levels.

Nigeria initially, then Egypt had spells of dominance in a goalless opening half on a cold, cloudy evening in the Moroccan commercial capital.

Paul Onuachu thought he had broken the deadlock on 36 minutes as he deflected the ball with his head past goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir.

However, a VAR review by the Moroccan referee revealed Onuachu had accidentally struck Hamdy Fathy with an elbow. The goal was disallowed and the Nigerian was yellow-carded.

Lookman was introduced by coach Eric Chelle for the second half, replacing Onuachu, and he had the ball in the net in the opening minute of the second period. However, the goal was ruled out for offside.

Nigeria started after the break with a series of attacks. Following a largely uneventful first half, Shobeir — the son of former Egypt goalkeeper Ahmed Shobeir — was forced to make several saves.

Salah seldom threatened and when he did cut in with the ball, the potential danger was quickly averted. Marmoush came on as the play-off passed the hour mark to try and boost a blunt strike force.

But as the match entered the final 10 minutes there was no sign of Osimhen being brought on, suggesting he might not have been fully fit.

In quick succession, Adams, then Marmoush threatened to score, but neither could deliver the finishing touch under pressure from opponents.

Salah then disappointed when offered a scoring opportunity from a free-kick outside the box. He hit the ball straight into the wall and it was swiftly cleared.
