Federer Commits To Swiss Indoors

Roger Federer has dropped out of the ATP Cup in January, meaning there will be no showdown with Andy Murray.

The 38-year-old, currently ranked three in the world, had committed to playing the inaugural tournament in Australia at the start of 2020, but has opted out in order to spend more time with his family.

The team competition sees 24 countries compete against each other – initially in a round-robin group stage – and Federer’s Switzerland side were scheduled to start their campaign against Murray’s Great Britain in Sydney on January 3.

It would have been the first meeting between the two since a semi-final in Cincinnati four years ago.

But with the veteran desperate to try and win a maiden Olympic gold medal in Tokyo in August, he is keen to keep himself fresh.

“It is with great regret that I am withdrawing from the inaugural ATP Cup event,” said Federer on the tournament’s official website.

“When I entered the event last month, it was a really difficult decision because it meant less time at home with the family and a fully intense start to the season.

“After much discussion with both my family and my team about the year ahead, I have decided that the extra two weeks at home will be beneficial for both my family and my tennis.

“It pains me to not be a part of the most exciting new event on the calendar. But this is the right thing to do if I want to continue to play for a longer period of time on the ATP Tour.

“I am sorry for any inconvenience or disappointment my withdrawal may cause for the fans, but I hope you can understand why I made it.

“For my Australian fans, I look forward to seeing you all at the Australian Open, fresh and ready to go.”

As a result of his withdrawal, Switzerland drop out of the tournament as they only qualified due to Federer’s ranking.

Alisson: Liverpool made too many changes this season

Published

on

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson admits they’ve let themselves down this season.

The Premier League title holders sit in sixth place on the table and are in danger of missing Champions League qualification for next season.

Speaking to ESPN, Alisson said: “Our season is far, far below (what it should be). I think we realise that, we feel that, we are aware of that. For the quality of the team, for the size of Liverpool.

“But all the factors you mentioned about change, if you had only had one, it would have been very difficult. Because if you look at it, the team that won the Premier League last year and the starting eleven (now) are very different teams, even in terms of characteristics.”

The tragic death of Diogo Jota has also been a factor.

Alisson also said, “We are experiencing emotional problems that go beyond human. Humans cannot handle it. Everyone handles it in their own way. We lost a teammate, we lost a friend and we have injury problems.

“Whatever you can say, problems that can arise in football, most of what can happen in terms of challenges, we have faced this season. But we never use that as an excuse. We try to do our best.”

Tottenham Hire Igor Tudor As Interim Manager

Published

on

Tottenham confirmed the appointment of Igor Tudor as their interim manager until the end of the season on Saturday.

Former Juventus boss Tudor replaces Thomas Frank, who was sacked on Wednesday, with Tottenham languishing only five points above the Premier League relegation zone.

The Croatian and Tottenham hierarchy reached a verbal agreement on Friday, and the deal has now been rubber-stamped.

“It is an honour to join this club at an important moment,” Tudor said.

“I understand the responsibility I have been handed, and my focus is clear. To bring greater consistency to our performances and compete with conviction in every match.

“There is a strong quality in this playing squad, and my job is to organise it, energise it and improve our results quickly.”

At Juventus, Tudor inherited a team that sat outside the Champions League places late in the 2024-25 campaign, but he guided them to a fourth-place finish after losing just one of his first 11 games in charge.

He was unable to replicate that form this season and paid the price.

The 47-year-old was dismissed in October after an eight-match winless run left the Italian club struggling in eighth place in Serie A.

Tudor has also had spells in charge of Lazio, Marseille, Verona, Hajduk Split, Galatasaray, and Udinese.

The former Croatia defender will be tasked with cleaning up the mess left by Frank, who was sacked one day after a 2-1 defeat against Newcastle on Tuesday.

Frank, hired from Brentford last year after Ange Postecoglou’s sacking, was removed after a miserable run of two wins in 17 league games.

Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange expects Tudor to prove a unifying force at a club in turmoil during Frank’s dismal seven-month reign.

As well as battling to avoid relegation for the first time since 1976-77, the north London club have reached the last 16 of the Champions League in their sole glimmer of hope this season.

“Igor brings clarity, intensity and experience of stepping into challenging moments and producing impact,” said Lange.

“Our objective is straightforward -– to stabilise performances, maximise the quality within the squad and compete strongly in the Premier League and Champions League.”

Tottenham’s players have been given time off until Monday due to the club being without a weekend match after their FA Cup exit in January.

Opting for a temporary boss follows the template used by Manchester United, who hired Michael Carrick until the end of the season after dismissing Ruben Amorim.

Tottenham had also been linked with former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic and ex-RB Leipzig boss Marco Rose prior to reports of their agreement with Tudor.

Candidates for the permanent Tottenham job are likely to include their former manager, Mauricio Pochettino after his United States commitments at the World Cup in June and July.

Lange and Tottenham chief executive Vinai Venkatesham can expect criticism if Tudor doesn’t improve results, given his lack of Premier League experience and reputation for producing the same kind of cautious performances that angered fans in Frank’s tenure.

Tottenham’s next match is the north London derby at home to Premier League leaders Arsenal on February 22.

Sweden coach Potter offers Liverpool fans Isak hope

Published

on

Sweden coach Graham Potter says there’s hope of Liverpool striker Alexander Isak being fit next month.

Isak is recovering from a leg fracture, with reports claiming he won’t be seen again this season.

But Potter insists the striker could make their World Cup playoff against Ukraine on March 26.

He told Fotboll Direkt: “I hope they (Isak and Dejan Kulusevski, Tottenham) can play, but these are big injuries. It’s tough to come back from injuries like that by March, but there’s a chance.

“Yes, I have spoken to both of them. They are on their way back and are optimistic.

“They are working very hard at home in the club team in an attempt to play with us in March.”
