EPL: Chelsea will not qualify for Champions League – Carragher

Published

on

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has said Chelsea will not qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Carragher was analysing the Blues’ 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town in the Premier League on Sunday.

However, Carragher was more positive regarding Newcastle United’s bid to finish in the top five.

The Magpies’ 4-1 win over Manchester United later in the day saw them overtake Chelsea and climb into fourth place.

Enzo Maresca’s men face a difficult run-in, with a home game against champions-elect Liverpool and away fixtures against Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.

This season, the team in fifth will qualify for the Champions League, but Carragher does not expect Chelsea to make it.

“It’s a massive blow, that,” Carragher said on Monday Night Football.

“It’s not just the two points they miss out on, it’s one of those fixtures that you look at on paper and think ‘that’s a guaranteed three points,’ because Chelsea have got really tough fixtures between now and the end of the season. I don’t see them making the Champions League. I don’t see it.

Onuachu doubtful for Southampton clash with West Ham

Paul Onuachu is a major doubt for Southampton’s Premier League clash with West Ham United.

The Saints will be up against West Ham United at the London Stadium on Saturday.

Onuachu sustained an ankle injury in Southampton’s home defeat to Aston Villa last weekend.

The 30-year-old was replaced by Tyler Dibling after the break.

Interim manager Simon Rusk provided an update on the forward’s fitness ahead of the clash with West Ham.

“He’s back in and around it the last day or two, so it might be a bit 50-50 at this point, so it’s one to assess tomorrow and give us a bit more time to see where he’s at. We’re hopeful but it’s not conclusive,” Rusk told the club’s official website.

The forward has scored four goals in 22 league appearances for the Saints this season.
