England Beat Finland To Get Back On Track

Published

on

England avoided fresh embarrassment after their Greek tragedy as Trent Alexander-Arnold’s superb free-kick inspired a 3-1 win against Finland in the Nations League on Sunday.

Four days after Greece earned their first-ever win over England at Wembley, Lee Carsley’s side were again far from convincing for long periods in Helsinki.

But they mustered just enough quality in the final third to spare their interim manager more misery.

Jack Grealish’s composed finish put England ahead in the first half, but Finland wasted several chances before Alexander-Arnold and Declan Rice sealed the win in the second half.

Although Finland’s Arttu Hoskonen netted in the closing stages, England’s third victory in four games since Carsley replaced Gareth Southgate kept them in contention for promotion from Nations League Group B2.

However, in the ‘land of a thousand lakes’, it was far from plain sailing for Carsley, who is in the spotlight as the Football Association ponder who should succeed Southgate on a permanent basis.

After winning his first two games against Ireland and Finland in September, Carsley’s tactical gamble — changing his formation to play with five attacking midfielders and no recognised striker — backfired badly in the Greece defeat and raised doubts about his suitability for the role.

Reports on Sunday claimed former Bayern Munich and Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is in talks with the Football Association, who have also been linked with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe.

Carsley is expected to remain in charge for England’s trip to Greece on November 14 followed by Ireland’s visit to Wembley three days later.

Calling for a “reaction” to the Greece debacle, Carsley made six changes as he went back to a more “conventional” line-up.

Dean Henderson replaced Jordan Pickford in goal for his first England start, while Harry Kane’s return from injury saw Carsley ditch his striker-less experiment.

Grealish, Kyle Walker, Marc Guehi and Angel Gomes also came into a team that found it hard going at times against a Finland side 60 places below them in FIFA’s world rankings.

NBA To Return To China For First Time Since 2019 Fallout

Published

on

The NBA will stage two pre-season games in Macau next October, its deputy commissioner said on Friday, marking its return to China after being frozen out for more than five years.

No NBA games have been held in China since two pre-season contests in 2019 after a tweet from then-Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey supporting pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong.

Morey posted an image bearing a slogan used by demonstrators urging the world to “Stand with Hong Kong”.

He later deleted the tweet and apologised, but China effectively cut ties with the league after NBA executives defended Morey’s right to freedom of expression.

Basketball is hugely popular in China and in the fallout the NBA lost hundreds of millions of dollars as a result of it being yanked off Chinese television until 2022.

“It’s my pleasure to announce that the Brooklyn Nets and the Phoenix Suns will play two pre-season games at Sands’ Venetian Arena on October 10 and October 12, 2025,” NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum said in Macau.

Macau is a special administrative region under China’s “one country, two systems” framework and is known as the country’s Las Vegas, being the only city that allows gambling.

Tatum said that “this region was home to some of the most passionate NBA fans” in the world.

The Venetian Arena is part of the Las Vegas Sands conglomerate controlled by the Adelson family, who are the majority ownership group in the Dallas Mavericks.

ESPN, citing unnamed sources, said the relationship between the NBA and China had improved with the aid of NBA China chief executive Michael Ma, who was hired in 2020.

The games will be part of a multimillion-dollar agreement to stage two annual NBA pre-season matches over the next five years in Macau, according to the South China Morning Post.

Las Vegas Sands was “excited…(to be) announcing a multi-year collaboration with one of the most powerful and iconic global sports brands in history”, chief executive Patrick Dumont told a Macau press conference.

Basketball fans in Beijing welcomed the announcement.

“Since NBA games have been absent from China for quite a while, their return would be very beneficial for amateur basketball fans to experience the highest level of competition,” Zhou Dacheng, a 32-year-old fan, told AFP outside an outdoor court in central Beijing.

“As a Guangdong native, I often visit Macau since it’s very close. I definitely plan to go watch these games,” Zhou added.

Some social media users, however, were pessimistic that NBA games would ever come back to the mainland.

“Can only go to Macau… this relationship (between China and the NBA) has not been repaired at all,” a Beijing-based user said.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver forecasted at a sports management conference in October that the league would “bring back games to China at some point”.

“We had a well-known incident there pre-pandemic with a tweet and China’s government took us off the air for a period of time,” Silver said.

“We accepted that. We stood by our values.”

The NBA has looked to grow globally, including playing recent pre-season games in Abu Dhabi.

Emirates Airlines sponsors the NBA Cup, the league’s in-season tournament.

China is home to a huge basketball fanbase and from 2004 to 2019, 17 teams played a total of 28 pre-season games there.

Macau’s multibillion-dollar gambling industry has remained its economic lifeline and main attraction for visitors, although Chinese leader Xi Jinping has urged the city to diversify its portfolio.

De Bruyne Difficult To Replace For Man City, Says Guardiola

Published

on

Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City face an almost impossible job in replacing Kevin De Bruyne thanks to the impact the Belgian has made over the past 10 years.

De Bruyne has won six Premier League titles among 13 major trophies since joining City in 2015, a year before Guardiola’s arrival.

The 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and has previously hinted he could be tempted by the riches on offer in the Saudi Pro League.

“I would like to have a 23-year-old Kevin and sign a contract for 10 more years,” Guardiola said on Friday.

“There are players that impact the legacy of this club and will be there forever.

“It’s not easy (to replace), but in the moment it’s going to happen we’ll see.”

De Bruyne was instrumental to City snapping a seven-game winless run by beating Nottingham Forest 3-0 on Wednesday in his first start for nearly three months.

Guardiola has been cautiously managing the playmaker’s minutes but conceded he may be pressed into selecting De Bruyne again for Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace due to an injury crisis.

“We don’t have many players so we’ll see,” added Guardiola.

“Important (to have him) back but after a long time. (Now we play) three days, three days, three days, we’ll see how does he react to this amount of games.”

Phil Foden remains out due to illness, while Nathan Ake is sidelined by a muscle injury late on against Forest.

Rodri, John Stones, Mateo Kovacic and Oscar Bobb are also missing for the English champions.

Technically possible – Napoli chief on club Osimhen could join

Published on December 6, 2024By Don Silas

Napoli’s Sporting Director, Giovanni Manna, has suggested that Victor Osimhen could join Paris Saint-Germain in the January transfer window.

According to Manna, it’s technically possible that Osimhen could leave Galatasaray for PSG in January.

Osimhen joined Galatasaray from Napoli on a season-long loan in the summer transfer window after failing to secure a deal with either PSG or Chelsea.

The Nigeria international has made a significant impact at Galatasaray, scoring nine goals and providing five assists in twelve games across all competitions.

Speaking with Mediaset via Tuttomercatoweb, Manna also acknowledged that PSG has yet to make a formal approach for Osimhen.

“Technically possible, but no one has called us,” Manna said of reports linking Osimhen to PSG in January.
