Ekiti Assembly Crisis: Falana Asks CP, Governor To Intervene

…Fayemi Working With Lawmakers To Impeach Me, Speaker Reacts

Human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, on Sunday asked the police authorities and Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji to intervene in the crisis rocking the state House of Assembly.

On Wednesday, security operatives sealed off the complex to forestall the breakdown of law and order. The incident happened a day after lawmakers elected a new Speaker, Gboyega Aribisogan.

There were suggestions from security officials that mayhem could be unleashed on the assembly after Aribisogan’s emergence as Speaker.

Fours days after the development, Falana issued a statement where he called on the Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Moronkeji Adesina, to provide security for the state legislators to carry out their constitutional duties.

He commended the police boss for intervening in what would have resulted in a crisis following the election of the new Speaker. The senior lawyer believes that opening the assembly complex will enable the legislators to attend to matters of utmost importance.

“Even though the election of the new leaders of the House was adjudged fair and free the Ekiti State Police Command was reported to have sealed off the House of Assembly complex based on intelligence report that some disgruntled elements were planning to set it ablaze and attack the democratically elected leaders of the House,” Falana said.

“We call on the Police Chief to provide adequate security for the members of the House to discharge their constitutional duty of enacting laws for the State and attend to matters of urgent importance.

“We are compelled to advise the Chief Security Officer of Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Oyebanji to take charge and ensure the immediate restoration of law and order in the House of Assembly to enable him to present the 2022 Appropriation Bill of the state.”

Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Gboyega Aribisogan, on Sunday, alleged that the immediate past governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, was working with members of the state legislature to oust him.

This comes days after security operatives sealed off the assembly complex on the suspicion that mayhem could be unleashed on the facility, following Aribisogan’s emergence as Speaker on Tuesday.

But the Speaker placed the blame at the foot of Fayemi, querying the former governor for failing to acknowledge him since his election as Speaker.

“The majority of members of Assembly voted for me but few of them who felt perhaps I did not follow the directive of the former governor, Dr Fayemi, thought that they would make the state ungovernable for even the administration,” Aribisogan said during a live appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

“I didn’t have any quarrel with him. I sent a message to him even last night asking, ‘What is happening? Am I no longer one of your loyalists? Why did you not congratulate me?’

“Up till now that I’m speaking with you, he has not done anything. Otherwise, he has been going around calling our members to go and impeach me tomorrow. That is the truth.

“As I’m speaking with you, seven of our members are locked up in Fem Guest House in Ado Ekiti, planning on how to impeach me tomorrow in cahoots with some of his former aides like the former commissioner for justice.”

However, Chief Press Secretary to Ekiti State Governor, Yinka Oyebode, dismissed the allegations as an in-house conflict among the legislative officials which he believed would be resolved amicably.

“What is playing out in the state House of Assembly is purely legislative affairs. I want to believe that the leadership of the house and also the leadership of the party will resolve it amicably.

“The information we have and that the police reported about the locking up of the place is that some hoodlums were about burning down the place a couple of days ago and because of that, some of them were even chased away while some jerrycans of fuel and cutlasses were recovered from them,” he said.

Oyebode noted that the executive arm of government did not have much to do with the matter as the House of Assembly members were elected representatives of the people of their constituencies.

“They are there to make laws for orderliness in the state. I believe they are up to the task to resolve it amicably among themselves,” he said.

“The stance of the governor is that he’s a democrat and he’s the head of the government. He also believes there is separation of power and every arm of government has a measure of independence.

‘How Fake Zenith Bank Agent Stole N141,000 From My Account’, Hairstylist Narrates

Mary Ajah, a hairstylist in Osun State, has narrated how a fraudster posing as a Zenith Bank representative defrauded her of N141,000.

The hairstylist said the scammer succeeded in his scheme because she was desperate to resolve a problem she had with her current bank account.

She said she chatted with the bank to find out what she could do to receive alerts via text messages and her email address but she was told to reach out to them via their social media handles or email addresses as they were not receiving calls at the time.

According to Ajah, this problem of not receiving notifications from her account had been going on since October, immediately after creating a current bank account.

“I sent an email to Zenith Bank, but they didn’t respond on time, so I chatted with them via Twitter. I got a number from the Twitter account and was asked to chat with them on WhatsApp,” Ajah said.

“I didn’t realise on time that the number I received was from an impostor. While we were chatting, the scammer said he wanted to help me link up my savings account to my current account so I could start getting notifications.

“Then I got a number from Twitter to chat with on WhatsApp, but I didn’t realise that it wasn’t their number.

“He requested my card details, which I gave him. But immediately after that, I noticed that they withdrew N141,000. It was then that I had to tell my account officer what had happened.”

Ajah stated that she reached out to the bank after the ugly incident occurred but nothing could be done to salvage the situation.

2023: I Rescued You From Obasanjo’s Onslaught, Tinubu Fires Atiku

….Your Continuous Gaffes, Miscues Are Effects Of Your Failing Health, Ex VP Replies Asiwaju

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has claimed he “rescued” the flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar from former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Abubakar, who served as vice-president under Obasanjo, had a running battle with his former principal for years.

Both men reconciled ahead of the 2019 general election.

However, Obasanjo has since thrown his weight behind Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) for this year’s poll.

Speaking on Monday during a campaign rally in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom, Tinubu said: “I am the one that rescued him from Obasanjo who wanted to roast him like goat meat.

“He ran away to Dubai, and when the election came again, he (Atiku) came for stomach infrastructure. We rehabilitated him in Lagos and gave him a ticket but he wasted it and used it to collect money.

“He faced Obasanjo, faced Buhari and failed. He failed with Jonathan. He failed in all his subjects.”

Meanwhile, the camp of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar said the “constant gaffes” of All Progressives Congress, APC, presidential candidate Bola Tinubu were embarrassing.

Tinubu has made over 20 gaffes publicly since he declared his intention to contest, Atiku’s special assistant on public communication Phrank Shaibu indicated on Monday.

A statement he signed said in Tinubu’s rally in Akwa Ibom, the APC flagbearer goofed about making Atiku a Senate President though his opponent never contested any legislative election.

Shaibu noted that the former Lagos governor’s gaffes and miscues are “effects of his failing health” which present danger to national security.

The aide recalled Tinubu’s comment on recruitment of 50 million youths into the Army to solve the unemployment problem, advice to Nigerians to renew their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) before they expire, among others.
