The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on Nigerians not to give up on the current economic hardship as the nation mark her 64th independence anniversary.

In a statement issued on Monday, the NLC President Joe Ajaero urged the downtrodden Nigerians who bear the marks or burden broken promises, exploitation and corruption by the government to not give up hope on their country.

“Being the text of the goodwill message by the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Comrade Joe Ajaero on the occasion of Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary.

“On the occasion of Nigeria’s 64th independence anniversary celebration, we congratulate all Nigerians, especially workers for their sacrifice, resilience or robust spirit in spite of serial acts of betrayal of monumental proportions by the political leadership at various times and levels.

“We urge the downtrodden Nigerians who bear the marks or burden of these broken promises, exploitation and corruption to not give up hope on their country.

“In light of the fact that their sacrifice has been taken for granted for so long, they should learn to protest within the limits of the law against injustices and subversion of democratic norms, culture and values by the dominant political elite.

“It should be apparent to the citizenry that the leading political elite are not ready to do the right thing except they are compelled to do so.

“In the same vein, we would like to sound a note of caution to our political elite whose pre-occupation is to circumvent the principles and practice of popular democracy that undermining of our democratic institutions can no longer be business as usual.

“The consequences of their acts of commission or omission brought us this far. It is time to turn a new leaf. Let it be the beginning of a new low.”

You Are Not In A Position To Talk About Sincerity, You Betrayed PDP – Atiku Replies Wike

Published

on

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has described the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, as a traitor who is working to undermine the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Recall that Wike stated during a media chat in Abuja on Friday that discussions about a coalition to remove President Bola Tinubu were insincere, adding that selfish motives drove those leading the efforts.

Wike accused Atiku and others of avoiding the problems plaguing the PDP, adding that they are simply interested in becoming president and not willing to work to build the party.

Reacting to the accusation, Atiku, through his media aide, Paul Ibe, said Wike has no moral authority to discuss integrity, accusing him of betraying the PDP.

Speaking to Punch, the former Vice President argued that the coalition comprises genuine Nigerians committed to ending the APC’s style of governance.

He stated, “Wike is not in a position to talk about sincerity. This is a man who betrayed his party, a man working with the APC to destroy and undermine his own party and the interests of Nigerians. So, what does he know about sincerity? Nothing.

“If he wants to speak on sincerity, let him talk to his principal, Tinubu, an absentee President running government from the Presidential Villa’s WhatsApp group. Wike should be sincere to President Tinubu to return home and do his job.

“Wike is not in a position to talk to anybody. Wike is working against his own state where he was once governor. He is trying to ensure he has absolute control of the government in Rivers, working in cahoots with Abuja to get the governor suspended. It is unfortunate that they just open their filthy mouths and speak on things they know nothing about.

“As for the coalition, the sincere Nigerians are determined to end the reckless, irresponsible, clueless APC government. Nigerians want to reclaim their country. The coalition presents Nigerians with a vehicle. Atiku Abubakar and others who are involved in it are just tools to an end. This is about Nigeria.”

‘It’s mischievous,’ Presidency denies claim Shettima was barred from Aso Villa

Published

on

The Presidency has described as false and mischievous reports alleging that Vice President Kashim Shettima was denied access to the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

In a statement issued on Saturday by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Stanley Nkwocha, the Presidency said the claims were “totally fabricated” and aimed at misleading the public into believing there was a rift between President Bola Tinubu and his deputy.

The statement was titled ‘Re: Mischievous Report On Access To The Presidential Villa By Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON’.

“The latest in this string of disinformation is a report claiming that the Vice President has been refused entry to the Villa.

“This is a feeble attempt to traduce the person and office of His Excellency, Vice President Kashim Shettima, GCON. For the record, nothing of the sort ever happened,” the statement read.

The report, which circulated via “obscure blogs,” alleged that military personnel had barricaded the entrance of the Villa to prevent the Vice President from entering.

Nkwocha dismissed the claim as “the wildest expression of wishful thinking” and accused those behind it of attempting to sow discord within the government.

The statement added, “It is understandable, though regrettable, that the mischief-makers continue to underestimate the strength of the bond and goodwill between the President and the Vice President.

“However, their questionable sources or habitual reliance on misinformation have once again led them astray. These fairy tales they publish serve no purpose beyond mischief and distraction.”

The statement also recalled a similar rumour earlier in the week regarding campaign posters bearing the image of Tinubu, which was also debunked by the Presidency.

Nkwocha assured Nigerians that Shettima remains focused on his duties and would not be distracted by “the imagination of individuals intent on creating smoke where there is no fire.”

He urged members of the public to disregard the report and encouraged journalists to verify information from credible sources, stating that no amount of falsehood would undermine the democratic mandate of the Tinubu administration.
