Covid-19 Third Wave: Conduct Proper Check Up On Foreign Travellers -Sanwo-Olu Warns Immigration

The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has charged the Nigeria Immigration Service to save Nigeria from the imminent third wave of COVID-19.

This is as he expressed worry over the fresh cases of the virus recorded in Lagos in the past few days and also the Delta variant confirmed in the country.

The governor charged Immigration with a statutory responsibility of preventing further spread of the virus, saying the Service should monitor immigrants coming into the country through land, sea, and air borders.

Sanwo-Olu said this on Monday when he received the Comptroller of the Lagos State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Bauchi Aliyu, at the State House, Alausa.

The meeting followed an alarm he raised on the disappearance of some air passengers.

According to the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, the passengers “came into the country via Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos but could not be reached for COVID-19 status monitoring by EKOTELEMED because they supplied wrong contact details.

“As the gatekeeper, Sanwo-Olu charged NIS to work with frontline responders stationed at ports of entry across border posts to ensure in-bound travellers adhere to laid down COVID-19 protocols.”

Akosile quoted Sanwo-Olu as saying, “We are monitoring events that may lead to the third wave of COVID-19 in the country and this is why we need to work together with the Nigeria Immigration Service. As the gatekeeper, you have statutory responsibility to work with our frontline health workers to ensure that people that are coming into the country obey our rules and conform with the protocols.

“Nobody is above the law. We have designated some countries as red zones, and this is not discriminatory. We want to be able to monitor anybody coming from countries with high burden of the virus. We want the Immigration Service to play its role so that we can nip the influx of new variants in the bud. We know that the virus is usually imported; we must be vigilant and ensure all protocols and guidelines are strictly observed, especially at airports.”

According to Akosile, “The Governor urged the Service to ensure passengers coming into the country were duly monitored and accounted for.

“Sanwo-Olu accepted the Comptroller’s proposal for the mop-up of irregular migrants in Lagos, noting that such operations would help improve security in the state and aid the government to identify non-Nigerians working illegally in Lagos.

“The Governor promised continued support and collaboration with the Service in order to make the state safe for investment and living.

“Bauchi praised Sanwo-Olu for the State Government’s support for the Service, pledging that the Immigration was ready to partner with the current administration in improving the state’s mega city status.

“The Comptroller also submitted a letter requesting the Governor’s support on logistics and operations.”

2027: Current Govt may use courts to frustrate ADC – David Mark raises alarm

The Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, David Mark, has alleged that the current administration is planning to use the courts to sabotage the party’s rising momentum.

The former Senate President raised the alarm in Abuja during a visit by the National Legal Support Group of the ADC, led by Abdullahi Abdurrahman.

Abdurrahman, at the meeting, revealed that no fewer than 310 lawyers have volunteered to defend the party in all ongoing and future legal cases across Nigeria.

According to him, the legal team has representation in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and is fully mobilised to tackle any legal challenges the ADC may face.

He said the party’s legal team includes prominent legal figures such as the ADC’s Legal Adviser, Peter Oyewole; former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN; and former Edo State Governor and legal scholar, Professor Oserheimen Osunbor.

“We are prepared to handle any case that may arise against ADC anywhere in the country,” Abdurrahman said.

Abdurrahman stated further that the lawyers believe in the ability of the current leadership to transform the party and make a meaningful contribution to national development.

He also extolled Senator Mark’s integrity, urging him to use his experience and statesmanship to guide the ADC to national prominence.

The leader of the National Legal Support Group urged the party’s Legal Adviser to provide necessary documents and updates on legal matters to help the team work effectively.

Responding, Oyewole assured the group that all legal protocols surrounding the recent coalition that birthed the new ADC were properly followed.

“There is no cause for alarm,” he stated.

Senator Mark, however, expressed concern about possible legal threats.

“ADC is the party to beat in 2027. The current administration may attempt to use the courts to frustrate our momentum,” he warned.

He urged Nigerians to support the ADC as a credible and patriotic alternative to lead the country forward.

Mark also commended the legal team for their dedication, encouraging them to remain alert and proactive as the party positions itself as a strong contender in the next general elections.

With a growing grassroots presence and a formidable legal structure, the ADC says it is ready to defend its vision and engage in the 2027 political contest.
