COVID-19: Northern Govs To Buy Mobile Test Vans
The Northern Governors Forum on Friday, had another teleconference meeting on how to tackle COVID-19 in the region.
During the meeting chaired by the forum’s Chairman, the governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, the governors resolved among other things, to purchase COVID-19 mobile test vans.
Also disturbed by the movement of persons despite a ban on inter-state travels, the forum resolved to employ more community strategy to man state borders.
The forum had during a recent meeting harped on the need for the Federal Government to pay more attention to the region, in terms of providing it with more COVID-19 testing centres among others.
During their Friday meeting, they acknowledged there had been improvements, but said the intervention by the Federal Government was still a far cry in respect to the region’s population and increase in COVID-19 cases.
Meanwhile, they applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his quick intervention in Kano State following the increase in the number of COVID-19 infections recently.
On how the region can help itself in terms of testing for the virus, the governors resolved to purchase mobile testing vans to facilitate testing in the rural areas.
Coming to the issue of inter-state border closure, the governors regretted that borders in the region were still being compromised and more illegal routes being created, amid measures against movements.
Consequently, the forum resolved to close all their borders from 6pm to 7am to all trucks carrying goods, which often are also used to transport people across the borders.
They further said they would increase the use of vigilante groups, neighbourhood watch, and traditional rulers in enforcing the border closures.
Equally discussed by the forum, was the profiling and return of Almajiris to their states of origin.
They insisted that Almajiris sent from one dtate to another had to be profiled, tested and accompanied by state officials and their Alaramas (teachers) to facilitate the process of settling in.
During the meeting also, the forum was briefed on the post-COVID-19 Economic Blueprint for Northern Region by the chairman of the committee, Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State.
Bagudu told the governors that the document was being developed and would soon be presented to the Forum.
A faction of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, led by its National Chairman, Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe has successfully uploaded credentials of its presidential, vice presidential and national assembly candidates on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC portal.
Nafiu, who disclosed the development in a statement he issued on Sunday, didn’t give details of the faction’s candidates whose names were submitted to the commission.
“The African Democratic Congress, ADC, under my leadership, has successfully completed the upload of our Presidential, Vice-Presidential, and National Assembly candidates on the INEC portal for the 2027 General Elections”, he said.
He said the party under his leadership is focused on fielding credible, competent, and people-centered candidates for the 2027 elections.
“This achievement demonstrates our Party’s firm commitment to safeguarding the interests of our founding and legacy members in the face of anti-democratic tendencies.
“As a Party, the ADC remains resolute in its mission to field credible, competent, and people-centered candidates who will provide purposeful leadership, promote good governance, and bring hope to the Nigerian people”, he added.

President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has described the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi as a “miracle centre presidential candidate.”
Bwala was reacting to Obi’s recent interview where he gave condition before agreeing to debate with the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi.
In an interview with media personality, Chude Jideonwo, Obi had said he would debate with Umahi when he qualifies as a presidential candidate of a political party.
He made the remark against the backdrop of the minister’s declaration that he was ready to debate with Obi over road infrastructure.
However, Bwala in a post on X, questioned how Obi emerged as presidential because he never went through the process of primary election.
Bwala wrote: “Peter Obi is telling Chude on his podcast that if H.E Dave Umah wants to debate him, he should first qualify as a presidential candidate first.
“Funny; the Peter Obi @PeterObi how did he qualify to be a presidential candidate? Did he (Peter Obi) participate in any presidential primaries?
“In fact has he ever participated in any presidential primaries? Imagine a miracle centre presidential candidate questioning a successful governor and performing minister on qualifications.”
The Peoples Democratic Party faction led by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has announced the successful upload of the names of its presidential candidate, running mate and National Assembly candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Candidate Nomination Portal ahead of the 2027 general election.
The party’s National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday.
Mohammed said the submission demonstrated the party’s commitment to participating fully in the 2027 general election.
“I am pleased to inform all PDP members and Nigerians that our great Party, under my leadership, has successfully uploaded the names of our Presidential Candidate, his Running Mate, and our National Assembly candidates onto the INEC Candidate Nomination Portal,” he said.
“This is a clear demonstration of our commitment to the promise we made that, under my leadership, the PDP will fully participate in the 2027 General Elections. Today, we have taken another decisive step towards fulfilling that promise,” he added.
A screenshot from the INEC PCR Portal accompanying the announcement shows the PDP dashboard with 410 new candidate forms registered, of which 367 have been submitted, and 42 remain pending.
The PDP chairman said the party was awaiting the completion of the upload of its governorship and State Houses of Assembly candidates.
He congratulated members of the party on the completion of the latest phase of the nomination process.
“As we await the conclusion of the upload of our Governorship and State Houses of Assembly candidates, I, on behalf of the National Working Committee of our Party, extend my heartfelt congratulations to all PDP members across Nigeria and around the world,” he said.
“Together, we will continue to build a stronger, more united Party and a better future for our nation.”
The development comes hours after INEC extended the deadline set for political parties to submit the names of their presidential and National Assembly candidates through the commission’s online nomination portal.
It also follows the announcement by the ruling All Progressives Congress that it had completed the upload of its 471 candidates, including President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, 109 Senate candidates and 360 House of Representatives candidates, to the INEC portal.
