Building Lagos Safely: LASBCA’s Commitment to Building Regulations and Standards

Published

on

Lagos State remains one of the fastest-growing megacities in Africa, with constant construction activities reshaping its skyline and residential spaces. In the midst of this rapid urban expansion, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) plays a critical role in ensuring that development is safe, orderly, and sustainable. According to the General Manager of LASBCA, Builder Gbaye Florence, the agency exists to protect lives and property by enforcing building regulations and standards that guide construction activities across the state.

LASBCA derives its mandate from the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, which empowers the agency to regulate building construction, monitor compliance with approved plans, and prevent structural failures. Builder Gbaye Florence explains that building regulations are not designed to hinder development but to provide a framework that guarantees structural stability, environmental safety, and public confidence. She emphasizes that every building, whether residential, commercial, or industrial, must meet minimum safety standards before and during construction.

Central to LASBCA’s operations is the enforcement of the Lagos State Building Code, which outlines technical standards for design, materials, workmanship, and construction methods. These standards address structural integrity, fire safety, ventilation, electrical installations, sanitation, and accessibility. The General Manager notes that adherence to these regulations ensures that buildings can withstand environmental pressures such as heavy rainfall, soil movement, and increased occupancy, which are common challenges in an urban setting like Lagos.

Builder Gbaye Florence stressed that no building project is allowed to commence without proper approval of architectural and structural designs by qualified professionals. These designs are carefully reviewed to confirm conformity with approved land use, zoning regulations, and safety requirements. She adds that this process protects developers and property owners from future losses while also safeguarding occupants and neighboring communities from the dangers associated with substandard construction.

Beyond approvals, LASBCA places strong emphasis on continuous site inspection. According to the General Manager, compliance must go beyond paper documentation to actual practice on construction sites. LASBCA officers regularly inspect ongoing projects to ensure that developers adhere strictly to approved plans, use appropriate materials, and maintain safe construction practices. Any deviation observed is promptly addressed, as unchecked alterations can compromise the structural integrity of buildings.

Builder Gbaye Florence further explains that enforcement remains a key tool in achieving compliance. While LASBCA prioritizes guidance and corrective measures, the agency does not hesitate to issue stop-work orders or apply sanctions where violations pose serious risks. She maintains that firm enforcement sends a clear message that building regulations are non-negotiable when public safety is at stake.

In recent years, LASBCA has also embraced technology to improve efficiency and transparency in the building control process. The introduction of digital platforms for plan submissions and monitoring has reduced delays and enhanced accountability. The General Manager notes that this innovation allows developers to track approvals while enabling the agency to maintain accurate records and respond swiftly to compliance issues.

Public education and stakeholder engagement form another important aspect of LASBCA’s work. Builder Gbaye Florence highlights that many building failures result from ignorance or deliberate disregard for regulations. Through sensitization programmes, media engagement, and collaboration with professional bodies, LASBCA continues to educate residents, developers, and artisans on the importance of building standards and the dangers of non-compliance.

Looking ahead, the General Manager reiterates LASBCA’s commitment to promoting sustainable and inclusive urban development in Lagos State. She explains that the agency is aligning building control practices with modern safety principles, environmental sustainability, and inclusive design. According to her, effective regulation today will determine the safety, resilience, and livability of Lagos in the future.

In conclusion, Builder Gbaye Florence affirms that building regulations and standards are the foundation of a safe and functional city. Through consistent enforcement, professional oversight, and public engagement, LASBCA continues to uphold its responsibility of ensuring that every structure in Lagos is built not only to stand, but to protect lives and support the state’s long-term development goals.

Bandits kidnap Four In Fresh Attack On Kwara Community

Published

on

Suspected bandits have attacked Kakafu community, a remote settlement in the Patigi Local Government Area of Kwara State, kidnapping four persons.

The attackers kidnapped four residents, including one man, a woman, and her two female children, during the operation that occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, a situation that threw the community into confusion.

According to information, the assailants, on arrival, opened sporadic gunshots into the air, thereby causing panic among residents, who scampered for safety.

However, a source (names withheld) hinted that the assailants operated unchecked without resistance before they eventually whisked their victims to an unknown destination.

“They did not kill anyone. They only abducted the four victims and fired indiscriminately to create fear and confusion among the villagers,” the source said.

A forest guard, on the grounds of anonymity, said residents were traumatised and fearful of another attack.

“People are still in shock. Panic has gripped the community because the assailants are believed to be hiding in nearby villages,” he said.

The spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, promised to get across as soon as she receives official information about the incident.

“I am not aware of the incident at the moment. Please, I will get back to you as soon as I obtain the necessary information,” she said.

She, however, had yet to do so as of press time.

Kwara has been experiencing a series of attacks by gunmen who wreak havoc, kill people at will, and kidnap others for ransom.

On February 3, gunmen suspected to be terrorists killed 170 people in an overnight attack on two villages in the Kaiama area of the state.

The violence increased fears among residents that terrorists are pushing south along the Niger-Kwara axis toward the Kainji forest, which security analysts warn could become their next stronghold.

Nigeria came under scrutiny after US President Donald Trump accused it last year of failing to protect Christians amid attacks and mass kidnappings.

US forces struck what they described as terrorist targets on December 25.

But the President Bola Tinubu-led administration says it is working with Washington to improve security and denies any systematic persecution of Christians.

Tinubu said the new military unit would stem further attacks and protect remote communities.

NiDCOM Condemns Killing Of Nigerian In South Africa, Demands Justice

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has condemned the latest killing of a 22-year-old Nigerian e-hailing driver, Isaac Satlet, in Pretoria, South Africa.

Dabiri-Erewa, in a statement on Sunday by NiDCOM’s spokesman, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, demanded justice and arrest as well as prosecution of those involved.

She said the increasing rate of criminality and killings of Nigerians in South Africa was worrisome and calls for serious concern.

Noting that Nigeria and South Africa have come a long way as African brothers, the NiDCOM boss wondered why some people were committing heinous crimes against fellow Africans.

Dabiri-Erewa urged the South African authorities to ensure that justice is served for the murdered Nigerian driver and ensure the protection of the lives and property of non-indigenes in South Africa.

She reiterated the need to strengthen the rapid response protocols and institutionalised structured escalation mechanisms for diaspora-related incidents.

She expressed the resolve of the Commission to intensify risk mapping and structured engagement with host authorities.

Meanwhile, a female suspect has been reportedly arrested in connection with the brutal murder of 22-year-old Nigerian e-hailing driver, Isaac Satlet, in Pretoria West, South Africa.

The incident occurred on February 11, 2026, after Satlet picked up passengers through an e-hailing platform.

The suspect is expected to appear before the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on February 16, 2026, facing charges of carjacking and murder.

According to police reports, Satlet was attacked by a male and female pair who hijacked his vehicle.

His body and the stolen car were later found in Atteridgeville.

Dashcam footage, which captured part of the incident, aided in the swift arrest of the female suspect.

Authorities are still searching for the male suspect, with more arrests expected.

The case has sparked widespread outrage, with calls for improved safety measures for e-hailing drivers.

Satlet, a student set to graduate next month, was remembered as hardworking and ambitious, with plans to further his studies in Canada.
