Buhari, APC Govs To Decide Convention Date Sunday

…As Aggrieved Members Ask Court To Stop Convention

President Muhammadu Buhari and governors of the All Progressive Congress (APC) will meet Sunday to decide a definite date for the conduct of the party’s national convention.

The party is hoping that a date in February is still feasible as it has come under pressure from the president to clean up its act or cede power to the main opposition party.

Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, who met with the president at the presidential villa, Abuja, Friday told correspondents that the Sunday meeting will centre on the proposed date for the convention.

He said Buhari’s admonition to the party that it risks losing power to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is a signal for the party to have a seamless convention so that it will not disintegrate.

He said the governors have now given the president the assurance that the convention will hold in February.

According to him, the president’s warning is for the party to redouble its effort and do the right thing.

Lalong observed that as a political party, the APC is made up of different interests saying, “what matters is that at the end of the day, we will elect our representatives.”

Meanwhile, some aggrieved members of the All Progressive Congress (APC), have dragged the Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker and Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

The APC, Chairman of APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were listed as 1-3 defendants in the Court processes obtained by journalists in Abuja on Friday.

The plaintiffs in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/3/2022, filed through their lawyer, Olusola Ojo, prayed the Court for an order to stop the convention on the ground that state congresses were yet to be completed in all the 36 states of the federation.

They raised five questions for the Court to determine and also sought eight declarative reliefs.

Some of the reliefs included an order of this Court restraining the 1st and 2nd defendants from organising and conducting the national convention of the 1st defendant unless state congresses of the 1st defendant were first concluded in all the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

They also prayed for an order of the Court directing the 1st and 2nd defendants to first conduct state congresses of the 1st defendant in Anambra state and Zamfara state before the national convention of the 1st defendant can be scheduled and conducted.

Others were, “An order of this Honourable Court restraining the 3rd defendant from giving approval effect to any action of the 1st and 2nd defendant to organise and conduct national convention of the 1st defendant unless state congresses of the 1st defendant are first conducted/concluded in ALL the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.”

The plaintiffs in the suit dated January 4, 2022, are: Suleiman Dimas Usman, Muhammed Shehu, Samaila Isahaka, Idris Isah, and Audu Emmanuel.

No date has been fixed for the hearing of the case.

World Cup: My Son Wept After Argentina’s Defeat To Saudi Arabia – Messi

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi, has revealed that his son, Mateo, immediately started crying after his side’s World Cup 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia last week.

Recall that Saudi Arabia came from a goal down to beat Argentina on November 22.

Speaking after Argentina’s World Cup 2-0 win against Mexico over the weekend, Messi said via Mirror, “Mateo left the stadium crying after the first game (vs Saudi Arabia) and Thiago came out counting telling me that if we won both games we would qualify.

“My family suffers the same as all Argentines but we’re happy and we get comfortable again because now our progress depends on us.”

Messi will now hope to lead Argentina to victory when they face Poland on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Messi’s agent, Marcelo Mendez, has played down speculation his client is on the verge of joining Inter Miami when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expires next summer.

Reports had emerged that Messi, who inspired Argentina to beat Mexico 2-0 in a World Cup tie last weekend, would leave PSG on a free transfer.

Reacting to the speculation, Mendez branded the rumours ‘fake news’.

“It’s false,” Mendez told CNN when asked about the reports. “It’s fake news.

“There is no negotiation for Lionel to join Inter Miami next season.”
