As Buhari, Atiku Battle For Votes Ahead Of 2019 Elections
The stage is set for what could be termed another ‘royale battle’ between two of Nigeria’s political gladiators, President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2019 general elections.
Having won the 2015 presidential election, where he defeated incumbent president, Goodluck Jonathan, against all odds, President Buhari is seeking to retain his seat of power for the second term after emerging victorious in the party primaries conducted last week.
On the other hand, former Vice President, Atiku, who early this year defected from APC after an unfavourable treatment, joined PDP in order to chase his long term political ambitions. His emergence as the presidential candidate for PDP over his closest contestant and Senate President, Bukola Saraki, after the party primaries last week, shows his determination and the confidence invested upon him by the party leaders.
There is no doubt that the 2019 general elections will definitely be a tough call for the two political gladiators considering the fact that party wise, they both have large followership across the country. However, if the power of incumbency is anything to go by, then on paper, Buhari may retain his seat for a second term.
But then, if the powers of the electorate are taken into consideration, knowing full their votes could decide the fate of any presidential candidates, then, there is still an open chance for Atiku to snatch victory in 2019.
Although the major questions on the lips of most Nigerians have always been that they need a president that will liberate them from the economic hardship, inconsistent power supply, creation of job opportunities for the youths to mention a few; without the usual promise and fail syndrome that has always been the case in the country.
The 2019 presidential elections will afford President Buhari an opportunity to convince the people on what plans he has for Nigerians while his counterpart, Atiku knows he must up his game beyond just the usual ‘I will do this and that’ in order to win the heart of Nigerians.
Regional stronghold where their fate in 2019 election could be decided
South West
It is assumed that the APC would clinch massive votes from this region that consists of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, and Oyo States irrespective of the tactical plans of the PDP.
In a simple logic, all the six governors are from the platform of the ruling party and with the presence of the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, it is believed that the South West region remains a ‘no-go-area’ for PDP or any other parties.
Verdict: Buhari To Win
South-South
The reverse is the case for the APC as PDP possessed a dominant strength in the South-South region based on the fact that out of the six state governors – Akwa Ibom PDP, Cross River PDP, Bayelsa PDP, Rivers PDP, Delta PDP and Edo APC – PDP possesses five against APC one.
Since 1999, PDP has shown that the South-South region remains their stronghold and that’s certainly going to be a minus for President Buhari ahead of the 2019 elections. Besides, the emergence of Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, PDP seem to have a Tinubu in the making as well.
Verdict: Atiku To Win
South East
Just like in the South-South, the PDP appears to have eaten deep into the body system of every matured voter in that region considering the fact that out of the five states of Abia PDP, Anambra APGA, Ebonyi PDP, Enugu PDP, and Imo APC, PDP still dominates ahead of APC and any other parties.
However, the possibility of sharing the votes in some of these states seems to be bright on the side of APC due to the influence of another ‘jagaban’ in Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha. And that may well give Buhari some elements of joy come 2019 elections.
Verdict: Buhari And Atiku To Share The Spoil
North Central
Perhaps, this region will serve the two presidential candidates an opportunity to set the lead if anyone of them are to become president in 2019. However, the APC are in total command of the region going by the number of governors they have within that region.
Out of the six states in the North Central such as Benue PDP, Kogi APC, Kwara PDP, Nasarawa APC, Niger APC, Plateau APC, APC have four against PDP two.
On paper, President Buhari has a bigger chance of winning more votes than Atiku and any other political parties come 2019 elections.
Verdict: Buhari To Win
North East
Interestingly, Adamawa State is Atiku’s place of birth, which ought to be another winning point for the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku, is being controlled by APC, something that could be tied to the fact that he was once a former member of APC before his defection early this year.
Be as it may, APC is certainly going to win the region except the unexpected happens because states such as Adamawa APC, Bauchi APC, Borno APC, and Yobe APC are controlled by the ruling party, while PDP is just having two states of Gombe PDP and Taraba PDP.
Verdict: Buhari To Win
North West
If there is one region the PDP should forget about, it is the North West. Besides, Katsina being Buhari’s home-state is also being controlled by the ruling party, an indication that APC will sweep all the votes in that region.
Out of the seven states in the region, APC command Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi and Zamfara; leaving just Sokoto State for the PDP. In a simple term, the North West region is a danger zone for PDP’s Atiku and it would take only mother-luck for the party to cajole the mindsets of the people to win from that region.
Verdict: Buhari To Win
Based on the aforementioned area controlled by the two biggest political parties in the country, it is easier to deduce that the APC presidential candidate, Buhari, stands a good chance of winning the 2019 general elections ahead of the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku.

I’m not for sale, Kwankwaso declares after Kano gov’s exit from NNPP
Former presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has reaffirmed his commitment to his political ideals, declaring that he would not compromise his principles for personal gain.
His remarks came amid a report that Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, alongside several local government chairmen, some members of the House of Representatives and aides, resigned from the NNPP.
Addressing party supporters at his residence in Kano shortly after the governor’s resignation on Friday, Kwankwaso said his long-standing political struggle had always been aimed at the emancipation of ordinary Nigerians.
“I’m not for sale. Our political convictions keep me grounded. If I were in it for personal gain, I would have taken the easy route and you would be looking for me elsewhere, not in this place,” he said.
He noted that the Kwankwasiyya Movement had been sustained by shared values rather than material incentives.
“Our shared vision is what keeps me going. If I were motivated by greed, I would have taken the money and run, and you would not be here showing your support,” he added.
Kwankwaso also urged his supporters to begin early mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections, cautioning against complacency.
“We need people like you who have sacrificed and stood by the truth. You should not relent, because one day, we will achieve our objectives,” he said.
Speaking on recent developments in Kano, the former presidential candidate stressed the need for immediate preparations.
“Going by what is happening in Kano today, we need to start preparing because there are people hell-bent on destroying what we built over time,” he stated.
Reaffirming his position, Kwankwaso assured his supporters of his resolve to remain steadfast.
“My mission is to always fight for the ordinary people. I will not compromise with those who exploit the masses,” he said.

Rivers Impeachment Suit Put On Hold As Court Adjourns Indefinitely
An Oyigbo High Court of Rivers State in Port Harcourt has adjourned indefinitely the suit filed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, challenging the impeachment process initiated against them by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Justice Florence Fiberesima of the Oyigbo High Court took the decision after being informed that two separate appeals had been entered in respect of the matter. The adjournment, the court held, would allow the Court of Appeal to first determine the issues before it.
At the resumed hearing, counsel to the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, and 27 lawmakers, S.I. Amen, (SAN), notified the court of the pending appeals and applied orally for a stay of proceedings.
The application was not opposed by counsel to the claimants, Paul Orikoro (SAN) nor by Lawrence Oko-Jaja (SAN), who represents Victor Oko-Jumbo, Orubienimigha Timothy, and Sokari Goodboy, the other defendants in the suit.
Justice Fiberesima consequently adjourned the matter sine die, pending the outcome of the appeals.
The development comes amid an earlier interim injunction granted by the same Court, which restrained the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, several lawmakers, the Clerk of the House, and the Chief Judge of the state from taking further steps toward the impeachment of the governor and his deputy.
The injunction barred the forwarding or consideration of impeachment notices or related documents for the purpose of constituting an investigative panel over alleged gross misconduct.
Rivers CJ Declines Assembly’s Request
Meanwhile, the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Simeon C. Amadi, has declined a request by the Rivers State House of Assembly to constitute a seven-man investigative panel to probe allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Nma-Odu, citing subsisting court orders and a pending appeal.
Justice Amadi’s position was conveyed in a formal letter addressed to the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, acknowledging receipt of two separate requests from the legislature dated January 16, 2026.
The requests were made pursuant to Sections 188(4) and 188(5) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), following resolutions of the House to initiate impeachment proceedings against the governor and his deputy.
But he said, “By the doctrine of ‘lis pendens’, parties and the court have to await the outcome of the appeal,” the letter read in part.
“In view of the foregoing, my hand is fettered, as there are subsisting interim orders of injunction and appeal against the said orders. I am therefore legally disabled at this point from exercising my duties under Section 188(5) of the Constitution in the instant.”
According to the Chief Judge, the Assembly’s requests were accompanied by extensive documentation, including copies of the notice of allegations of gross misconduct, the Rivers State Impeachment Panel (Conduct of Investigations) Procedure, 2025, and relevant newspaper publications.
However, Justice Amadi disclosed that his office had earlier been served with two interim injunctions issued by the Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo on January 16, 2026.
The suits—OYHC/6/CS/2026 filed by the Deputy Governor and OYHC/7/CS/2026 filed by Governor Siminalayi Fubara—listed the Speaker and 32 others as defendants, with the Chief Judge named as the 32nd defendant.
The interim orders expressly restrain the Chief Judge from “receiving, forwarding, considering or howsoever acting on any request, resolution, articles of impeachment or other communication” from the House of Assembly in relation to the impeachment process for a period of seven days. Certified true copies of the court orders were attached to the correspondence.
