Africans coming for more Grammys, Tyla says
South African singer Tyla made history at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, becoming the first artist to win the category twice since it was introduced.
The 24-year-old clinched the prestigious award at the Crypto.com Arena, taking home the honour for her single “Push 2 Start.”
This marks Tyla’s second Grammy victory in the same category, following her first win in 2024 for the global hit “Water.” The milestone win cements her position as one of Africa’s most successful international music exports.
After receiving the award on Sunday, Tyla spoke to Billboard about what the recognition means not just for her, but for African artists worldwide.
“I’m so grateful. This is insane. It just shows me how far we can take it. Being from where I’m from, we really have a chance, and that’s just amazing,” she said, visibly emotional.
Tyla also emphasized the importance of seeing more African musicians celebrated on the global stage, highlighting the need for continued recognition and opportunities.
“When I was young, I wanted to see my girls getting Grammys and everything, and we’ve got that, but we need more. I’m excited to see the rest of our African superstars who are killing it right now be there as well. We are coming,” she added.
Her win is not only a personal triumph but also a symbol of the growing influence of African music in the global industry. As Tyla continues to break barriers, her message is clear: the world is ready for more African artists to shine.

Warner Bros. Says Resuming Talks With Paramount On Its Buyout Offer
Warner Bros. Discovery said Tuesday it is reopened talks with Paramount Skydance on its buyout offer, giving the company a week to beat out a rival Netflix bid.
These discussions scheduled to end February 23 are designed to give Paramount Skydance a chance to make its “best and final offer,” Warner Bros. Discovery said in a statement that stressed it prefers the Netflix merger offer and has scheduled a special shareholders meeting to vote on it on March 20.
Television and film titan WBD, which owns CNN, put out word in late October that it was open to acquisition offers.
WBD’s board subsequently accepted an offer from Netflix to buy only its streaming and studio business.
Paramount Skydance is seeking to buy all of WBD for $108 billion. Netflix is offering $83 billion for its more limited merger.
The Netflix offer does not include buying WBD television properties such as CNN and Discovery. These would belong to a newly created and publicly traded company called Global Networks if the deal is sealed.
Paramount Skydance accuses the WBD board of failing to present shareholders with details needed to properly compare its offer to the Netflix bid.
During the talks that opened Tuesday WBD said it will discuss “deficiencies that remain unresolved and clarify certain terms of PSKY’s proposed merger agreement.”
Since making its initial offer Paramount has amended it twice.

“Why I stopped paying Tithes to churches” – Toke Makinwa reveals as she shares her personal history
Nigerian media personality Toke Makinwa has revealed why she stopped paying her tithes to churches.
In a candid conversation with Chude Jideonwo, she shared her perspective on tithing and the role of the church in people’s lives.
Toke reflected on the unintended harm religion can sometimes cause, noting ‘post-traumatic church syndrome ‘ as one of the damages it has done to people.
Makinwa questioned the need to give her money to institutions that already possess wealth, while many individuals are struggling for basic survival. According to her, she now provides financial support to hospitals, maternity wards, and individuals with urgent personal needs.
“I started thinking, if I have money and someone tells me they need it to pay rent, why should I pass it into a building that’s already rich.
I would rather give my tithe to strangers who tell me their actual needs. The church is built. The pastors have money. Let’s help people the church cannot reach”.
To further buttress her points, she recalled how she handed over her entire brand endorsement deals to her church in search of a blessing, but now the story has changed.
“Seven years ago, I didn’t touch one naira from an endorsement deal; I carried it all into the church. Now, I give where it directly helps someone in need”.
Makinwa stressed that helping a neighbour should take priority over fulfilling a routine religious obligation. She added that true impact happens when resources reach those who cannot afford food or healthcare.
