AFCON 2025: CAF probes misconduct in Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon, Morocco q-finals
The Confederation of African Football has launched an investigation into alleged misconduct by players and officials during the CAF Africa Cup of Nations 2025 quarter-final clashes between Cameroon and Morocco, as well as Algeria and Nigeria.
The probe follows reports of confrontations with referees and disruptions in post-match areas.
According to a statement posted on CAF’s official website on Monday, the continental football governing body has collected match reports and video evidence suggesting potentially unacceptable behaviour and has referred the matters to the Disciplinary Board for further review.
“CAF has referred the matters to the Disciplinary Board for investigation and has called for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons are found guilty of any wrongdoing.
“CAF is also reviewing footage of an incident involving members of the media who allegedly misbehaved in the mixed zone area,” the statement read.
In the quarter-final fixtures over the weekend, Nigeria secured a 2-0 victory over Algeria in Marrakech, with goals from star striker Victor Osimhen and forward Akor Adams propelling the Super Eagles into the semifinals.
However, the match ended in chaos as Algerian players confronted match officials on the pitch, leading to scuffles and an attempted pitch invasion by fans that was thwarted by stadium security.
The Algerian Football Federation has since lodged a formal complaint with CAF.
They cited controversial refereeing decisions by Senegalese official Issa Sy, including a denied penalty for an alleged handball in the Nigerian box during the first half.
Separately, Morocco advanced with a 2-0 win over Cameroon, but the match was also marred by refereeing disputes.
Cameroon’s team felt aggrieved over two potential penalties not awarded, both involving Moroccan defender Adam Masina.
Morocco’s coach, Walid Regragui, dismissed suggestions of home-team bias in a post-match press conference.
CAF stressed its commitment to maintaining professional conduct at all events.
“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers.
“Appropriate actions will be sought against anyone whose behaviour is not consistent with professional conduct at CAF events,” it added.

Ex-chef sues Neymar for £37,500 over 16-hour shifts, injuries
Brazilian football star Neymar is facing a lawsuit from a former personal chef who claims she was subjected to gruelling working conditions at his Rio de Janeiro estate that left her with lasting physical injuries, football website GOAL has reported.
According to, GOAL on Saturday, which cited Brazilian outlet Metropoles as having sight of the court documents, the chef was required to prepare meals daily not only for the Santos and Brazil forward but also for an entourage of up to 150 friends and associates.
The scale of the task allegedly forced her into 16-hour shifts, far exceeding the hours stipulated in her original contract, which required her to work from 7am to 5pm on Mondays to Thursdays and from 7am to 4pm on Fridays.
Despite those agreed terms, the chef alleged that she frequently worked until 11pm or midnight, including on weekends, and was routinely denied her legally mandated lunch break.
According to the court documents, she was required to clock in for the break even while she remained actively working.
GOAL quoted the chef’s legal team as stating, “The claimant did not regularly enjoy a lunch break. Throughout the entire employment contract, the plaintiff was required by the defendant to clock in for the lunch break, even though she remained actively working during that period.”
The physical demands of the role reportedly took a severe toll on her health. She claimed that carrying meat portions weighing 10kg and loading heavy supermarket bags during extended shifts caused her to develop back problems and hip inflammation. These conditions form a central part of her legal argument.
GOAL reported that the intense workload, which required the chef to stand for extended periods without adequate rest, resulted in documented medical issues that she directly attributes to her duties at the Mangaratiba mansion.
The chef, who earned the equivalent of approximately £1,065 per month, is now seeking £37,544 in total compensation.
GOAL said the figure is intended to cover severance pay, fines, unpaid overtime, medical expenses for injuries sustained and damages for the denial of mandated rest periods during her employment.
Neymar, who is currently pushing for a place in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup, has declined to comment on the allegations when approached by local media, according to GOAL.

Paulo Dybala is sidelined with a knee injury
Roma, battling for a Champions League spot in Serie A, will be without Argentine striker Paulo Dybala for over six weeks with a knee injury, Italian media reported on Friday.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport and Sky Sport Italia, Dybala underwent surgery in Rome on Friday after suffering “a complete longitudinal tear of the external meniscus”.
The 2022 World Cup winner cut short Thursday’s training session with what Roma initially described as “muscle fatigue”.
He is expected to be out for 45 days, which means he will miss seven Italian league matches and the Europa League round of 16 tie against fellow Italian club Bologna.
He did not appear for Roma in February, with the club giving a “knee problem” as the reason. He returned to the bench for the match against Juventus on March 1 but was an unused substitute in a 3-3 draw.
Dybala, 32, lost his undisputed starting position at Roma late last season. In this campaign he has scored only two goals in 17 Serie A appearances.
Roma are fourth in Serie A, 16 points behind leaders Inter Milan, but only two points behind Napoli in third and three ahead of fifth-placed Como.

Buffon eager to see Totti make Roma return
Juventus legend Gigi Buffon says Francesco Totti returning to AS Roma would be good for Serie A.
Former Roma captain Totti is now in advanced talks to take a management role with the Giallorossi.
Italy team manager Buffon commented on Il Messaggero: “I’d be happy about it; he can make a great contribution to Roma.
“We need to understand what he’d like and what he’s suited to, if he’s prepared. He can certainly make a technical contribution; he has he right quality, and a vision for the players.”
Meanwhile, on his current role with the Azzurri, Buffon added: “Everyone must maintain their own character. (Gigi) Riva wasn’t a talkative person, not a chatterbox, but those five words he uttered were set in stone.
“He was convincing, authoritative. There was enormous respect for him, for his charisma. And it meant being able to ‘influence’ others to be an added value.”
