2019 AFCON Qualifier: Libya Down, South Africa Next To Fall – Rohr
Super Eagles technical adviser, Gernot Rohr has charged his team to remain focus ahead of the big clash against South Africa on November 17 at the Johannesburg’s Soccer City.
The three-time Africa champions defeated Libya 3-2 in Sfax, Tunisia on Tuesday night in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, to move top of group E with nine points.
However, Rohr told a Lagos based radio that was monitored by Thepledgeng that the team next task would be on how they would overcome South Africa in November 17.
Coach Gernot Rohr has praised his Nigeria side after they saw off Libya 3-2 in a crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Tuesday night.
“I compliment the boys. For this match, but also for the last few days. During training sessions they all did very well. That’s not easy after a long week.
“After winning two games against the same opposition we have done well. Now we are heading in the right direction. Our mind is on the next game against South Africa.”

Tottenham boss Frank: I know the blame falls on me
Tottenham boss Thomas Frank knows fans are angry after Saturday’s defeat at home to West Ham.
Spurs fell 2-1, with Callum Wilson scoring West Ham’s winner on 93 minutes.
On the chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning”, Frank said in the aftermath: “Of course, I’ve probably had better times, it’s probably not the best time of course. But I understand, I’m the man in charge. So the blame will go to me.
“That’s fair, no problem in that sense. As long as they are backing the players, doing everything they can, to support them and drive them forward, that’s what we do, and we will keep going forward.”
The Dane also said: “If you’re not winning enough, we know you will not get enough support from the fans. But when we’re winning, it will change, when we start winning again. Which we will do. I’m not in doubt of that. I think also you can look a little bit at the performances.
“Let’s say the Bournemouth and the Villa and this game here, if the players stop running, or stop doing anything, or not working hard, and we are not the team that’s closest to winning, then you can say OK.
“But I think the team is working very hard. And I still think, and I know it sounds a little bit crazy, that we are close to something very good, than further away.”

Real Madrid ace Brahim on brink of AFCON wonder double for Morocco
It is rare in Africa Cup of Nations history to see as many as five players still in contention for the tournament’s Golden Boot, providing an intriguing subplot ahead of this weekend’s final and third-place play-off.
Morocco’s Brahim Díaz leads the scoring charts with five goals from six matches for the hosts, where he has been a driving force in their run to Sunday’s final against Senegal in Rabat.
Behind on four goals each are Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Egypt captain Mohamed Salah, who missed the chance to take over at the top when they played in a 0-0 draw between their sides in Saturday’s third-place playoff.
Salah, who was rested for Egypt’s final group match against Angola, has scored in four of his six appearances at the finals. His overall Africa Cup of Nations tally now stands at 11 goals across five tournament appearances.
Nigeria’s former African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, has scored three goals, while Morocco striker Ayoub El Kaabi, expected to lead the line in the final, is also on three.
Despite the tight race at the top, the record for the most goals scored at a single Africa Cup of Nations tournament does not appear under threat. That mark remains Mulamba Ndaye’s nine goals for former Zaire at the 1974 finals.
Vincent Aboubakar from Cameroon netted eight times on home soil in the 2021 edition but was not selected for 2025. That remains the second highest number of goals.
Egypt’s Hossam Hassan, coach of their team in Morocco, and Benni McCarthy from South Africa both scored seven times in the 1998 edition of the finals.
The Golden Boot was shared among five players in 2015, and seven players in 2013. On both occasions they netted three goals.
No player has won the award more than twice, with Laurent Pokou, Abdoulaye Traoré (both Ivory Coast), Roger Milla, Samuel Eto’o, Patrick Mboma (all Cameroon), Rashidi Yekini (Nigeria) and Francileudo dos Santos (Tunisia) all claiming it in multiple tournaments.
Eto’o heads the list of all-time Cup of Nations goals with 18.

Tinubu Hails Super Eagles For Winning Bronze At AFCON
President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the Nigerian national team, Super Eagles, for Saturday’s bronze medal victory at the 2025 African Cup of Nations.
The Super Eagles overpowered Egypt, defeating the seven-time AFCON winner 4-2, in a penalty shootout after the regular time, in which the Nigerian team dominated.
The President, in a statement issued by his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, commended the Super Eagles for putting behind them the disappointment of the semi-final loss to host nation, Morocco last Wednesday.
Tinubu stated that the Super Eagles players, through their victory, have once again demonstrated the determination, persistence, and can-do spirit associated with our country.
According to the President: “Despite their good run during the tournament, the Eagles lost the semi-final match to Morocco during the penalty shootout last Wednesday, and our people’s hopes of winning the championship were dashed.
“However, our players remained undaunted, and exhibiting the resilience of the Nigerian spirit, their efforts have now paid off.
“We will all be proud of them as they receive their hard-earned bronze medal on Sunday in Rabat, Morocco.
“Thank you, our gallant Super Eagles. Thank you, our national team players. This bronze medal surely feels good like gold.”
